A Thousand Suns Meteora Hybrid Theory Reanimation Living Things Minutes to Midnight The Hunting Party One More Light relistened to THP recently, and man, that record didn't age all that well. it rotates with OML depending on the day (some of the songs are simplistic, but they came out at a time when i really needed to hear them)

I still enjoy some of THP a lot, but I love you putting A Thousand Suns first, it’s my favorite also.
A Thousand Suns Meteora Hybrid Theory Minutes to Midnight The Hunting Party Living Things One More Light I don’t dislike any of these. I’ve always respected a ton that the band kept pushing their sound and didn’t remain stuck in nostalgia their whole career. I also just genuinely enjoyed a lot of their sonic progression over the years.
THP is so frustrating because half of it is them firing on all cylinders and the rest sounds... half-assed? A bit harsh, uninspired? Some of Chester's melodies sound like he recorded them right after hearing the songs for the first time, they just don't have the catchiness you'd expect from them. That and he started to sound strained around that time so it feels like he's playing catch up with the heavier instrumentation.
For me, THP is actually weirdly the album I find myself reaching for the most, despite it not being my favorite of theirs. But I love the rougher heavier sound and Keys To The Kingdom, All For Nothing, Guilty All The Same, just a great start to the album. I love the more social commentary aspect to it and the features don't feel gratuitous. I dunno, I also like that it and One More Light are polar opposites of each other in tone.

for the record, i don't hate any Linkin Park album or think any of them are "bad". i think each album on its own had a lot of potential, and some of them hit that potential much better than others. i was actually really pumped for The Hunting Party, and have some fond nostalgia of blasting it during a summer off from class while playing Battlefront II alone in my room, lol. it just feels somewhat thrown together by the end (i agree that the first few tracks and all the heavier moments are easily the highlight). i guess that melodically some of those songs feel like ones we've heard before, if that makes sense?
I feel this so strongly about both THP and LT. They got into a phase after ATS where they wanted to drop an album every 18 months or so, and I think it really shows in how underdeveloped some of the songs on those two albums feel
It is, in many ways, their magnum opus and the culmination of what their melting pot approach and sound can achieve. Mike and Chester reach a height on their duets that is immensely satisfying, especially considering where Mike started from as a vocalist.
Mike as an actual singer stepped up big time on A Thousand Sons and I say he's gotten even better since then.
So what's everyone's final predictions for this LP big announcement later on? My final predictions will be the following : The rest of Linkin Park will do a press conference for LPU members and discuss what they have been up to the last few years Then they will show a behind the scenes video of them in the studio writing and recording They will release the music video for the first single off their new album and in the music video they will officially reveal their new lead singer Then they officially reveal the title of their new album and the new singer will arrive onstage with the rest of LP and do an Q & A with the fans And the live stream ends with a live performance then officially announcing world tour dates afterwards.
I think One More Light is bad and the only time they lost me, but at least we got the title track which is top tier and makes me teary eyed everytime. The few performances before Chester's passing, with the screamed high notes in the bridge, are so powerful. I must've rewatched them a hundred time. Honestly I would've loved more stuff in that vein than the hodgepodge of mid 10s pop trends we got. As a whole the album sounded dated on arrival, reminding me of the worst stuff of that time (The Chainsmokers & co).
One last crackpot shout out, but yesterday I was thinking to myself that Richard Patrick would be am interesting option.
Yeah it's probably close to what's gonna happen, though because it's 2024 I wouldn't be surprised if an album isn't actually revealed until early next year and that we'll get a couple more singles first.
i'll give Heavy a pass too. not a really creative song, but feels like it's in the same vein. brought my racing mind some solace up on release.
Heavy has a fantastic hook. I know it’s more pop forward than some of their stuff but the chorus really soars when he sings “holding onnnnnnn.” I will also say I really like Sorry For Now. For so long, we’ve been waiting for the day that never comes. And it’s finally fucking here. I am beyond excited.
I really enjoy Invisible off that album too. have an acoustic Mike played without the y'know production of that album and it's a really lovely song
Loved HT as a kid and then just casually followed their singles until A Thousand Suns. That record is special. It feels so cohesive yet impossibly varied. After ATS I dug a couple singles but that’s it. I didn’t really understand the pop pivot on the final album but respect the bold choice, from what I’ve heard from that record it just seemed too sterile.
A Thousand Suns was a key development in my music taste in accepting that an album can be great as an album beyond just having catchy songs. EDIT: And I'm so glad that when I saw them they played Waiting for the End.
Whatever happens, I’m sure the band has thought long and hard about the decision to move forward given it has been 7 years so I have to respect that as a big fan of their early material.
Minutes to Midnight Hybrid Theory A Thousand Suns Meteora Reanimation The Hunting Party Collision Course One More Light Living Things …maybe? But that top 4 could be in any order, and The Hunting Party isn’t that far removed. And, an EP’s worth of One More Light would also be at that level.
