absolutely. That EP/single THE CRIMSON CHAPTER is miles above this and 6 of the 8 tracks are the same song
that EP ruled, the production was so much more varied and interesting than the pretty generic sounds on here
I guess I get why people are comparing it to Living Things, but I think that album is much more successful. It’s definitely safe, but I think those songs are generally strong enough that it works as a back to basics album, whereas this just feels like an inferior band trying to make a Linkin Park album.
One thing I'll say about these guys is even if I don't like all their albums, they all have at least a couple songs that I'd comfortably put among their best
I’m listening the their interview on the Zack Sang show right now. I found it interesting that it was actually Rob who introduced Emily to the band.
IGYEIH, Two Faced, Heavy Is The Crown and Emptiness Machine are awesome. I’m really impressed with Emily’s effort here and I think she sounds great. I’ve always been a more casual LP fan but these songs have really pulled me in.
Of course it’s a weird funnel, it’s not exactly common for this situation to happen. I wouldn’t exactly call the suicide of the lead singer/co-lyricist of songs like “Numb,” “In The End,” “Heavy,” etc “other faff.” That’s… incredibly demeaning to anyone who connected with this band over those exact emotions. Chester is irreplaceable, so to use the entity with which he is intrinsically linked to try and create a similar product makes it a very odd experience that must be connected and compared to their previous work. And for the most part, this was fine. I really liked a couple of the songs. But the entire time I was waiting for it to feel like Linkin Park… and it never did. Just like LP cosplay. Because Chester was the key piece of LP for me, and probably many others. It’s not that hard to understand.
Of course I'm not trying to demean someone's death. That post was made in the middle of a very long and stressful workday, and so I used the most immediate language that came to mind. I'm just speaking in generalities, for any band, and sure, I understand this may not be just any band. Sorry, I think we're just going to have to agree to disagree. The idea that what a band chooses to call themselves affects the quality of their music is an absurd notion to me. A good song is a good song, and if you don't like a song, giving it another name, that changes nothing about the song. I posit that what would actually happen is that you still wouldn't like the album, you'd just feel better about them making it, which is not their problem, quite frankly.
I also disagree about this not feeling like Linkin Park, but I'm not looking for Emily to sound like Chester and I also recognize Linkin Park as being more than Chester.
I do find it kinda funny to say this doesn't feel like Linkin Park, when the most valid criticism of the album is how much of it sounds like a safe retread of their past work. I guess both things can be true at once? But, the latter kinda cancels out some of the former, imo. Also, pretty obvious to me that Penlab wasn't calling Chester taking his own life "other faff"...??? Come on. We all have our own tastes and feelings and shit, so if losing Chester is insurmountable for your relationship to the band, tapping out on the next era is obviously fine. But, of course it makes sense to call this "Linkin Park," as long as enough of the remaining guys want it; if they call it Linkin Park, then it is Linkin Park.
I agree with all this but, and maybe this opinion isn’t actually very common, what’s wild to me is how much Emily really does sound and feel like Chester at times. obviously she’s not trying to replicate him but there are a lot of times her vocal fry seems really similar and her softer voice just isnt that far. If it’s “Chester or nothing” for somebody then so be it, and I’m sure the band explored a range of voices for the role, but I can’t imagine there are many people that would’ve made this transition to a newer vocalist much easier.
this is the internal struggle alot of the current fans have. differentiating the two opinions. wouldit have been better to be named 'linkin park with emily armstrong'?
No because then it'd have to be "Linkin Park with Emily Armstrong & Colin Brittain" and that's such a mouthful
