I see this going one of two ways. 1.) They push this thing forward pissing many people off. 2.) They address it, call it off, and that's the end of LP.
I see it going the way of number 1. I agree that it’s one of two though. It must be a bit of a one shot deal to some extent. Certainly in the near future anyway.
I was talking with someone last night about this part. It’s really easy for us outside of the LA bubble to really rally against Scientology but inside it’s got to be quite difficult. There have to be multiple members working at Warner and once one of them got wind of LP’s work with her, they could have started a campaign to ensure that she was it by any costs necessary.
I think they will have to address it though. I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t hear something else tomorrow.
They would never just call it off. They already recorded the album. It’s already been pressed, it’s already been pre ordered tens of thousands of times. Warner has already spent money on marketing this return. They been in pre production for this tour for months. Venues are booked and advances have been paid for the festivals. Best case scenario is they release the album, scale down the tour routing for next year, and call it quits shortly thereafter.
it completely boggles the mind that with the abundance of incredible female vocalists out there they fucked up this hard by choosing Emily. (again, purely personally, I still think she's doing a great job technically)
also I feel so stupid having to add every time that she's doing a good job because I've grown tired of people deflecting criticism by saying "oh you're just upset it doesn't sound like Chester."
Yeah, it's a shame because on an objective level I think she's a great choice, and I actually liked Dead Sara, but, and no pun intended, in the end it doesn't matter. I don't understand how their team, if they're doing their due diligence, could fuck up this hard without it being willful in some way.
A thousand times this. I really wish the people throwing temper tantrums on their Reddit could crawl out of their ass.
yeah, in an ideal world i think she's a really good choice from a musical standpoint. sadly, we don't live in that ideal world. i'm probably gonna give the album a listen, but the fact that this has been mired in so much controversy and that she seemingly continues to associate herself with terrible people who belittle survivors of sexual assault has really soured a good chunk of my excitement for this album cycle
yeah my fiancée straight up told me that if they come to town she'd rather I didn't go and who can blame her (not that I would at this point)
I’m still figuring out my thoughts, feelings, etc., but as of right now… I do plan on listening to the new album, in spite of my sadness & frustration around the evil cult bullshit. That could change, of course, and I’ll have to navigate what that listening looks like. Certainly not eager to attend a concert or buy merch to wear based on where things are! But, based on this new song and how I experienced it, I think the meaning I’ll create with it for myself will outweigh my heartbreak at a shitty person helping to make it. (Unless lyrical moments throughout the album change that.) There have been other bits of music that meant a lot to me that I’ve no longer been able to enjoy, so… idk! Regardless, shit sucks.
Controversies aside, I don’t think Emily is that good of a vocalist for LP anyways. I’ve finally watched the full performance and her vocals were rough with One Step Closer being the only track I found really solid. Bonnie Fraser or Courtney LaPlante from Spiritbox would dominate in the same position and they wouldn’t have ties to Scientology and/or defending someone as vile as Danny Masterson..
Man I do not think Courtney would work here. She has a super clean voice, pop-like, then does more traditional harsh vocals. Neither of those I think is what LP would look for. Plus Spiritbox rules and I don’t want her taking time off from that.
especially since they're gearing up to release their next album within the next year. singing for Linkin Park would absolutely overshadow that. idk if Dead Sara has done anything in a while, so Emily taking time off to tour with LP probably makes more logistical sense.
I don’t think Courtney would do it and I don’t even want her to (Spiritbox does rule) but do I think she would do a better job than Emily? Yeah. She’s a pro and can handle the trade offs between harsh and clean better IMO.
I think what Micah is getting at is that it's not just about being able to do harsh and clean but also having a vocal that sounds reasonably close to Chester.
Personally I really do think Emily is a great fit for Linkin Park. Overall she did really well during the performance and her voice meshes great with what Chester was. Some songs maybe sounded a little "rough" but I think you can chalk some of that up to it being her first public performance with the band and it was a full set, so can't expecting perfection.
Personally, I've never been interested in anyone replacing Chester, always hoped the band members who wanted to make music would just do so with a new band, oh well
My personal take every single time this inevitably comes up is that a band is more than one person and the remaining members have every right to continue with what they started if it makes them happy. It's unfair and selfish to expect otherwise.
