Gotta say, I vehemently disagree with this piece. The notion that Lily fucking around when she was younger (and presumably learning from those experiences) makes it acceptable for her husband, who is in his 40s at this point, to do the same just because he missed the opportunity early in life is fucking weird. And the idea that she ignored red flags to purposely put herself and her family in a troubled relationship simply to "feed the album" is crazytown conspiracy BS. Idk - I don't have a ton of empathy for rich people, and I literally don't have anything riding on Lily Allen's dissolved relationship with David Harbour (this is the first album of hers I've listened to in full), but a lot of that post reads as "contrarian for contrarian's sake" to me. If Harbour didn't want the smoke, he probably shouldn't have crossed so many boundaries with a romantic partner who was bound to write about it in some capacity.
All I know is my side won't be someone who posted a photo of their ex husbands dick dressed up as a minstrel doll while fueding with Azalea Banks
Weird thing to post and then refuse to elaborate lol but like I said, this is the first Lily Allen album I've listened to and do not know the lore. So if that happened, it does in fact sound really bad and also completely unrelated to David Harbour being a seemingly shitty husband
I mean I'll post links to articles about it but not the image itself https://beat925.iheart.com/content/...-past-resurfaces-after-she-criticizes-beyonc/ Lilly Allen privately apologized to azealia banks about her racist post..
i Googled it. it's really bad. had to do some digging to even find the image. not sharing it here given it's nature, but it's seemingly stemming from an insult Azealia threw at Lily's ex. doesn't warrant a response like that though.
Lily has done really sucky things. There's a reason she's a controversial figure, to say the least. In this album scenario, her ex husband did sucky things to her in ways that are not okay to treat a significant other None of the sucky things are okay. And acknowledging one side of the suck doesn't absolve the other side of the suck. Let's just try not to suck.
This website is generally one of the more progressive/leftist spaces I visit online which is why it's particularly interesting to see what gets held to account and what gets handwaved away. The pattern of dismissing or minimizing racism particularly directed at WoC is very disheartening. Theres lot of it surrounding M@tty He@ly for example. I don't mean to call anyone out, it's just a frustrating observation
How do you want me to hold Lily Allen accountable? I said that it was really bad because it is. Would never defend it or dismiss it. (I wasn't even aware of it until yesterday because I didn't listen to Lily Allen until literally this week.) In this particular instance, it seems like David Harbour also did some shitty things to her as a partner. They are entirely different kinds and levels of shitty that are essentially incomparable; why does one invalidate the other?
She also assaulted zoe kravitz if that hasn't been mentioned She's very problematic at best and has also had a hard life. I judge her hostile and racist actions against others and then also empathize with her incident of literally having her stillborn child stuck inside of her body for 12 hours and the trauma and horror of that Just like I judge tf outta Matty Healy for being... Matty Healy while also having empathy about his substance use issues. Idk I do agree that folks can be selective about who they care to call out but hopefully we can have good faith discussions around it
“Lily arrived with the song titles, which is really unusual. She would come in and say, ‘I want to write a song called Dallas Major,’ and we’re like, ‘OK, let’s have some backstory”: The group songwriting sessions that yielded Lily Allen’s West End Girl
I for one find it absolutely easiest to write lyrics if I have a title first so it’s also what I do but yeah it’s usually received as unusual when I tell people that
