yeah there's a way to have the joke that he's one of the many white man who fetishize Asian women without the racism
either way, it's completely beneath PTA to leave that shit in the film. truly sucked to hear people in my audience laughing at that (sadly it might've been a given though, as it was the first time it screened in the boston area). i'm just glad i got to at least warn a friend of mine who's Asian about when it's coming
I laughed at it because it was an incredibly dumb thing for an idiot racist to do. I think making fun of racist dipshits is a positive thing
Even if it was an attempt to poke fun at a racist, it didn't work. As I said, we're already shown that he's a racist who is using Japanese culture to try to make a profit. The accent isn't needed for the point to be made.
If you told people you were going to see, or invited them to come watch, a movie called Soggy Bottom they would reassess the entire relationship and likely cut all ties with you. These are just facts.
Apparently it was the name actually used by the kid it's based on (who is also Tom Hanks' producing partner)
Licorice Pizza is the better name because its vibes fit the film perfectly. But, I do support the notion that Soggy Bottom would’ve been a good choice. Just, not quite as good.
Soggy Bottom was actually never the name according to PTA, just what they used as a production company name (ie this shooting location is booked by Soggy Bottom LLC)
