James Hanley: The streaming platform is piloting a new opt-in feature that lets artists review and approve eligible releases before they go live. The company says protecting artist identity has become “a top priority for 2026,” noting that “the rise of easy-to-produce AI tracks has made the [misattribution] problem worse” across streaming services.Spotify’s new Artist Profile Protection feature — now in limited beta — has been designed to combat ongoing issues with misattributed releases, whether from metadata errors, artists sharing the same name, or “bad actors” who are “maliciously” attaching music to artists’ profiles. I have my issues with Spotify, but credit where credit is due - and like you said it's ridiculous that it's not the default and that it's such a rampant problem between bad actors or simply mistakes with artists sharing the same name.
This has come up a lot recently. Wasn't aware of the AI Cartel song but... Been seeing it a lot with random "sped-up" versions of songs that don't seem artist sanctioned, etc. Wonder if this will also help to fix some of the 'duplicate' artists as well...
I 99% support this move, but it's already fucking with one of my clients who now can't accurately attribute a sample (not deepfake) of another artist's vocals on streaming because the sampled artist has disavowed their prior catalog. Oh well. Now can we get social media companies to start banning accounts that impersonate artists to scam their fans out of money? I know multiple female musicians who've had fans approach them at meet-and-greets thinking they've been in long-distance relationships. Absolutely terrifying stuff.
You should see Cartel's Youtube Music page, its been hijacked by some Ai "Artist" for over a year now
