I posted this in the Bad Bunny thread, but thought it's probably more at home in here as it covers a few artists... Was just looking at our Billboard equivalent chart we have over here, just to see how big some of the bigger latin artists fare. Man, we don't listen to much urbano AT ALL. The Despacito effect did not reach the UK! J Balvin has a couple of singles that charted, one of them is because of the Dua Lipa feature and that only charted at 72. Rosalia has charted just once and again, a feature from Travis Scott is what got her there (although she's a newer artist, so not too surprising). And the man of the thread Bad Bunny has only one song that has ever charted and, yet again, that was only because of a Drake feature. And he's the probably the biggest pop star in the world right now! The only one I could find with a moderate bit of success was Daddy Yankee, but he still only has three songs charted and there was a 10/11 year gap between them. And none of them have had an album chart. Which just blows my mind. I thought that maybe there would be a bit more presence than there is, but no. I guess there's more "ooooeeeer we speek engerlish over 'ere" types influencing the charts than I thought haha
How did Bad Bunny become the world's biggest pop star? Literally found this article about something similar about an hour after writing that post haha
Also, I’ve been taking a deep dive into Selena’s work, and this podcast is awesome: Anything For Selena
This might be partly based on the formula your charts use. Every country’s chart organization does it differently. Yours might be excluding some modes of consumption that are more popular among people that listen to artists like this.
Luis Chavez also known as FURGOD is an upcoming latin Artist that you will love! has a unique style and I know he's coming out with a Spanish album! FURGOD on Apple Music
been really into rauw alejandro's album saturno. ive always been a bit disappointed at how scared reggaeton has been to include new sounds into its style. i loved x100pre specifically because bad bunny really seemed to be interested in pushing past the formula but felt like the his next couple of records took steps back in that regard. saturno has been exactly what ive wanted from the genre, a record that takes the styles and cadence of reggaeton and combines it with other styles (in this album's case miami bass and 80s electronic records). he's been on my radar since last year's excellent "todo de ti" and i felt like this album really delivered on his promise. below are some of my favorites from the album, but the whole thing is worth a listen.
Have I evangelized Emilia here yet? She’s a pop star from Argentina and she’s doing pretty well in the Latin pop space but I think she has a shot at breaking into other markets. Her second album came out in November, titled mp3, styled after Y2K. Super cute concept, and she can dance, too. She’s really been filling a gap for me in American pop music.
Recently discovered Nathy Peluso and i'm absolutely loving her... Some trap bangers, some traditional flamenco-esq Spanish pop, some RnB, some hip hop, even some neo soul on her first album. Really great stuff, especially her new album that came out a couple of weeks back.
Big fan of MJ Nebreda. From Venezuela, eclectic, electronic latin pop/rap. This is her latest EP, which is on the more dance-y side of things, but still very good...
