I put this one up there with Jorge Ben. Amazing Argentinian fusion that speaks to my Andean roots. Little bit of everything. EDIT: There's only like 1 "fusion" (from the jazz perspective) track here with a killer sax part lol but good one to post nonetheless. Jorge Ben's "forca bruta" is the best for funk/soul/latin fusion
This bop has a video now so I can stop posting lyric videos!! But it's awkward af cause little mix look like women like they are serving looks and then cnco look like these lil teen boys oop
Favorites of 2017: Natalia Lafourcade's Musas is something special. Hasta la Raíz remains one of my favorite albums of 2015 but her follow up goes in a completely different direction and she manages to kill it again. She foregoes her more folk-tinged pop for elements from Mexican and Latin American traditional music, even recording the album with acoustic guitar based band Los Macorinos. So. Good. If you enjoy that, give "Zamba puta" by La Lá a try. It's much like the above with bossa nova and jazz elements more present. As light and unassuming as the album is there is some heavy stuff here about gender stereotypes, sexism, domestic violence. Just a moving and beautifully crafted half hour of music.
Yay I love Natalia!! Thanks for sharing your recs with the thread! I haven't heard the other artist yet so I'll def check them out when I can
I had no idea this thread exists. My favorites from 2017 are probably Romeo Santos' "Golden" and Nicky Jam's "Fénix". Golden is in my top 10, it's real good. I also liked Cubafonia a lot, I bought it for the family restaurant and people love it. Also, I love how omnipresent "Latin remixes" have been this year. I know that can be calculated but they often let artists shine that deserve it and damn it they make the songs better.
I'm always torn between like non Latino artists trying to cash in on the jams and being excited about the exposure, espesh for the artists who deserve it.
I just recently discovered Diana Gameros and I'm so taken. I'm kinda obsessed and I'm gonna buy her new record asap. "From the age of 13, Gameros has resided in the United States, and for much of that time, she’s been an undocumented immigrant. Now with legal status through a work permit and a green card on the way, Gameros writes a love letter to her homeland with 13 standout renditions of classic Mexican songs on her latest album, Arrullo, in anticipation of soon returning to Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Gameros independently releases her sophomore album, Arrullo, on November 10, 2017. Having spent her teenage years in Michigan and adult life in San Francisco, Gameros has longed to visit the land where she was raised. 15 years have passed since she last travelled to Ciudad Juárez. Heartbroken while her city went through devastatingly tough times with militarized policing of streets and drug cartel conflicts, her family has experienced firsthand violence leaving Gameros feeling trapped with no way to help. With a sense of loss and being absent from many family milestone moments, she channels her fears, guilt and powerlessness into a beautiful tribute reminiscent of her childhood in Mexico"
Somehow I completely missed that Prince Royce put out an album this year. I've heard all the singles and follow him on Twitter but it was somehow still off my radar. He disappointed so much with double vision that I think my brain was giving him a giant NOPE. Now I need to go back and see what other releases I've missed!!
One thing I love about Romeo is that he makes videos like it's still 2004 and he is signed to Murder Inc, haha
