i have a very hard time imagining myself liking this less than baby driver, an awful film pretty much everything else he’s done ranges from B to A+ though
This is officially my favorite film of the year. Holy shit. Loved pretty much everything about this. Taylor-Joy and McKenzie are fantastic and seeing Matt Smith in a role like this was incredible too. Went way more horror than I expected it too, and I even got some slight Italian horror vibes from it in parts which I am always all for.
Loved this. Agreed on the unexpected lean into the horror aspects. All performances were stellar. Edgar Wright rules. It also proved that my musical knowledge is not any good as I thought that I heard a unique "older-sounding" cover of the The Weeknd's House of Balloons and thoroughly embarrassed myself on the ride home by saying so when I learned that The Weeknd's song simply uses a sample of the original by Siouxsie and the Banshees.
An Italian horror film I was watching on Criterion Channel recently (forget its name, sorry) had a supplemental video where Wright talked about his love for it, so that makes sense.
yeah I know Wright is a big fan of Giallo and Argento especially. It's nice to see a little of the inspiration bleed through.
Gotcha. Misread your post as being more surprised, lol. And, the one I was watching was Blood and Black Lace by Mario Bava. The whole giallo thing is something I definitely wanna spend some more time with eventually.
haha, sorry I'm awful at wording things almost all the time. I'm a big fan of giallo but a lot of them are very hit or miss. It's also a huge genre to jump into but I mean Argento, Bava, Lucio Fulci, Sergio Martino and Umberto Lenzi are all some that are good starters.
damn the first Wright film i didn't really vibe with. lost me halfway through. ending felt corny and lost it's suspense.
Hmmm. I loved the first half of this. The early dream sequences and their subsequent progressions were captivating. But then it lost me a little in the third act. Someone the effects and moments played as a little unintentionally comedic. Didn’t mind the twist though.
Yeah, this lost me about halfway through. The technical side of things was pretty stellar the whole way through though.
God this was gorgeous and Anya and Thomasin are both stars, and Edgar sure knows how to soundtrack a film Matt Smith was also well casted I thought he did a good job with the horror elements, the faceless dudes were hella creepy did everyone in the 60s dance like Austin Powers, actually make an Austin Powers movie in this universe how did Ellie fall asleep in a hoodie I would also stay in a haunted apartment because it would be less traumatizing than having a roommate like Jocasta also Ellie should design something for Keeley from Ted Lasso my main criticism of this movie was that it was bizarrely anti sex work, clearly Sandie didn't have much agency with the burlesque and sex work but they're most certainly not inherently evil I do agree with the other point though that if Anya killed someone they deserved it I also wish we knew more about Ellie's past, were the visions just of her mom what exactly happened to her, also how exactly the visions worked is still very confusing
not nearly as bad as baby driver, but yeah, this was pretty bad. completely baffling ending and fairly lifeless during the first hour. technical achievement but otherwise not much to this.
I’m not sure if you’re overthinking or under thinking the movie, but either way, you’re certainly thinking of it the wrong way. Too literal, for something that’s clearly embracing its medium: cinema. All that matters for the story is that she’s clearly more in touch with the supernatural than those around her. The exact “origin” and “explanation” of her “powers” is useless.
Yeahhhh idk about this one. Visually it was of course stunning. But maybe Wright should stick to comedies.
Pretty rad. Prolly put it above worlds end and maybe tied with baby driver. Some things I wasn’t crazy about…CGI could be better.
