Grizzly Man doesn't have a point of view? The whole documentary is about the danger of nature and the naivete of modern people.

We had Get Out at my theatre for like 9 weeks. This is unheard of at a small theatre like mine with only 8 houses, but it would just not stop killing it every week.

I think it's much better than a lot of people gave it credit for. But I've enjoyed all Arnold's work that I've seen. Still have to catch up with WutherinG Heights.

    Outland - 8/10
The Fate of the Furious - 8/10
    The Fisher King - 9/10
    Donnie Brasco - 8/10
    The Long Riders - 6.5/10
    Drop Zone - 4.5/10
The Legend of Tarzan - 5/10
    Pompeii - 5.5/10

Good start to the week that unfortunately slipped in quality quite dramatically in the second half. Outland is easily one of my favorite post-Bond Sean Connery directed by Peter Hyams who is someone I find to be an underrated director. The Fate of the Furious though not my favorite from the second half of the series it was still a fun and entertaining film that despite being totally unnecessary (felt like the last film ended perfectly) was a joy to watch thanks to characters I have watched on screen for nearly two decades. The Fisher King is another solid film starring Robin Williams who manages to be comedic and endearing at the same time, only the second film I have seen solely directed by Terry Gilliam (despite being a huge Monty Python fan) so I hope to see more from him. Donnie Brasco though having solid performances, a good script and plot pales in comparison to other gangster films. The Long Riders was a decent Western (starring four sets of brothers and lots of violence) but there have been far better in the genre and Walter Hill has done far better films as well. Drop Zone (like Terminal Velocity) is skydiving action over substance but with far better people behind and in front of the camera comes across as even more disappointing. The Legend of Tarzan has a great cast, looks pretty good, takes on some themes I can respect but is utterly devoid of a worthwhile script and plot. Pompeii though it is historically and scientifically accurate, has solid CGI and a good score for some reason doesn't deem the events of the destruction of Pompeii interesting enough so had to shoehorn in the sword and sandal genre making the whole affair feel unnecessarily convoluted. Would've much preffered the film to concentrate solely on characters with the disaster being given a bit more time to happen but all that takes a backseat because swords need to be swung and a villain is needed apparently. So not the best week but far from the worst.

Award for worst villain death while also being so funny I nearly choked goes to Drop Zone -

  17. Mad Max: Fury Road - Black and Chrome Edition

I don't know if I would say it was better than the color version, but it certainly had a different enough vibe to it to warrant its own incarnation. Some action scenes are hard to follow, as the black and white makes it hard to keep track of which vehicle is which, but most of the time, many of the shots are just as breathtaking, if not more so. And it definitely felt like I had a much different emotional reaction this time around: whereas when I first watched the color version I was super pumped by the action scenes, this time it just felt bleak and somber throughout. It didn't feel like the same movie.

I watched with subtitles this time, so I caught more of the story. I already liked the overall arc of liberation, but it was further enhanced by the little things like names of people and places that I was able to pick up this time around. Also, the first time I watched the movie, I didn't pay enough to Nux in the first half, so halfway through the movie, I was like wait, who is this guy again? Since I knew what to look out for this time, his arc of disillusionment felt more satisfying. Furiosa is still my favorite part of the movie. One scene that stood out in black and white was when she reacted to the revelation that the green place is no more.

Watching this makes me excited to see how Logan in black and white will be.

Fury Road is the rare recent movie I watched twice. It lives up to all of its prestige and word of mouth. It understands how to use visuals coherently in a way almost no other mainstream film does.

    Still Alice - 8.5/10
    Saving Mr. Banks - 7.5/10
    The Blob (1988) - 9/10
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - 8/10
    American Gigolo - 7.5/10
    Clash of the Titans (2010) - 4/10
    The Hard Way - 8.5/10
    Captain Phillips - 7.5/10

Immensely enjoyable week and not just thanks to the two rewatches in the form of The Blob and The Hard Way both of which are long time favorites (for different reasons, The Blob for its incredibly fun and gory special effects and The Hard Way for James Woods and its witty script) that I finally purchased physically. The only dud was Clash of the Titans which was disappointing since I was expecting it to be silly and stupid fun but it was just stupid and boring with a cast that deserves to be in a far better film. Still Alice was great at portraying the devastating impact that alzheimer's has with Julianne Moore being utterly engrossing. Saving Mr. Banks though being an evident Disney propaganda film gets by on the fabulous performance of Emma Thompson with her part of the script being both funny and emotionally engaging. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 though not as good as the first in some areas was better in others but was still an ultimately fun experience that has plenty of laughs and a great soundtrack (even better than the first for me). American Gigolo was one of those films that for me seems to pivot around one central performance and though Richard Gere is great, the production is slick and I love the score it ultimately comes across as hollow and devoid of any reason to care about such a lead character. Finally Captain Phillips worked best for me when it was focused on the ins and outs of what goes on with a merchant vessel and the hijacking upon said ship, the scenes off that ship worked a lot less for me but Hanks and Abdi were great.

    Christine (2016) - 7.5/10

What a wild, crazy, and most of all, heartbreaking story. This movie does an AMAZING job of falling into the world of Rebecca Hall's character, as her unraveling feels so unnecesary. You just want to run into the screen and shake some sense into her that she's being irrational! She continuously pushes away the people who care about her and it's sad! But it's not sad, like, in a crying way, it's a sad in a most fascinating way. This woman is incredibly smart, driven, and when she's not going mental, actually good at what she does. Her unraveling is SO frustrating as a viewer and that frustration is definitely felt from characters in the movie as well (the friend and most of all the mother).

The score isn't higher though because the movie does run a bit long and there are just so many more questions i'm dying to know. At one point she and her mother have this heated exchange where she blames the mom for all that "hippie bullshit" and not "actually preparing her for the real world". Damn, I want to know more about that! Because in the movie the mom seems like the most sweet, caring, normal mom in the world. They both refer to "the Boston situation" a lot, which I'm also incredibly curious about. I feel like the movie, with this AMAZING story, could have done much much more.

It's a good movie...a great story....but the execution is a little flat. Rebecca Hall is fucking amazing in this though.

    O Brother, Where Art Thou? - 7/10
    Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events - 8/10
    Jason Bourne - 6.5/10
The Talented Mr. Ripley - 8/10
Hell Is for Heroes - 6/10
    Maximum Risk - 7.5/10
Close Encounters of the Third Kind - 9/10
    The Raid - 8.5/10

A solid albeit mostly unremarkable week but no film I watched I hated and that counts for something. Maximum Risk and Close Encounters of the Third Kind were rewatches since I have kind of been enjoying Van Damme movies lately for no apparent reason and the Collector's Edition arrived of Close Encounters of the Third Kind on the streaming service I use. O Brother, Where Art Thou? was odd and didn't always work for me but I was far from bored while watching it and it did have some great music and a few laughs throughout. Finally got round to watching Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events in full since I have seen bits of it a few times but never watched it wholly until now, flawed and not as nasty as it clearly could be but Carrey is great and the production is exquisite. Never been into the Bourne series all that much (the first one is the only one from the whole series I properly liked) but Jason Bourne was alright enough (solid action, the part in Athens was brilliant) but it felt like a complete retread and didn't add enough to the series to really justify its existence. The Talented Mr. Ripley was fun but the coincidences that happen throughout were a bit off putting but thankfully the cast, the production and the general atmosphere were distracting enough. Hell Is for Heroes felt a lot longer than it actually was (maybe that was on purpose considering it is set during WW2) but it really did drag for me but the cast was good and the action was visceral enough. Finally The Raid and why oh why have I taken this long to watch this? Incredible action that is actually filmed well that is equally thrilling and wincing in its brutality. Looking forward to watching the second film.
