Whooaaa. Colossal was way better than I thought it'd be.

It was flawed, but very interesting and unique.

lol definitely. Driving home, my buddy and I keep on coming up with more issues we had with it, but most of them are pretty nitpicky. But it did surprise me in a few places, which was cool.

My biggest problem is when it became a thriller where she's trying to fight crazy Sudeikis with sticks and bookshelves it kinda lost the thread as a metaphor for addiction and personal demons.

Also, while I didn't have a problem with her getting physical in order to stop him from getting to the playground, I thought it was really dumb for her to straight up meet him on the playground and put her fists up to fight. That's exactly what she was trying to prevent. It lessened the severity of their actions[/spoilers]

I did think there was an element of symbolism there. Like "I'mma stop you and everyone will see it"

Man, is Playtime and impressive, insightful movie. It's not as outright funny as the first two Hulot movies, but the ace satire more than makes up for it.

I hated what I watched of Les Vacances so much that I've been putting this off for years.

Wow. Honestly fairly shocked to hear that. Generally Vacation is viewed as the most lightweight of the bunch, so it's definitely still worth seeing Mon Oncle and Playtime.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - 6.5/10
    The Shallows - 7.5/10
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World - 10/10
    Solace - 3.5/10
    Awakenings - 9/10
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - 8/10
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - 9/10
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - 9.5/10

Been a great and quite frankly epic week in some regards despite a dud with Solace which really isn't worth talking about and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them being decent but the setup overload got wearisome. Apart from those two this week was a mix of rediscovery and surprise as The Shallows was surprisingly effective with its stripped down narrative and plot being used to its fullest coupled with a strong performance by Blake Lively keeping it all together. Finally got round to revisiting Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World which I have been meaning to for sometime and I enjoyed it more than I ever have and is now one of my favorites which saddens me in a way because this could've easily been the start to a great series. Started to go through some of the films I haven't seen from the late Robin Williams and started with Awakenings which managed to be emotional in varying ways without coming across as sentimental or exploitative which was surprising as many films fail to do that also Williams was great as well as De Niro. Finally I tackled The Lord of the Rings trilogy which was a weird one as I had seen the first two the once a while ago but for some reason never got round to watching the third film and it was great to finally finish the series off in practically one go. A flawed series but nonetheless one that is thoroughly enjoyable and it still amazes me how little money was spent on these three films considering the incredible production coupled with an ensemble cast and the size and scope tackled.

Going In Style - 2/5. In short: Don't waste your time, watch Last Vegas instead.

I am disappointed with this movie. In a nutshell, the premise is very similar to Last Vegas. A bunch of old guys with nothing much to lose, but instead of a bachelor party, this revolves around a bank heist. It has a good cast (Morgan, Arkan, Caine) and should have been a decent comedy.

However, this just was way off the mark for me. The flick felt like it tried so hard trying to get you emotionally invested in the characters that it lost sight of the comedy factor. I think the rotten tomatoes summary is actually spot on "Despite the considerable talent of its leads, Going in Style is light on laughs and plays it safe far too often."

It does have a really good soundtrack which is probably why i didnt give it 1/5.

I just remember having a way better time with Last Vegas.

I really liked Slums of Beverly Hills but it was super distracting that Marisa Tomei's character was supposed to be Jewish

I would but I feel like I got all I needed out of the versions I watched and the idea of them being even longer (when they were long enough already) doesn't sound too enticing.

Just watched Fences and now I feel like Denzel should have won Best Actor.

On record, I like Manchester more. But Denzel outperforms Affleck.

Bummer. Well, if you ever decide to revisit the series, I'd suggest checking them out. To me they are the definitive versions. I try to watch them once a year.

Also, what's your method for picking the movies you watch? Sometimes they seem so out of left field so I'm just curious if you are following a list or something.

I'm sure I will at some point watch them, never say never. I am sort of following a list but mixing it in with spur of the moment choices since I am subscribed to numerous outlets to give me the broadest choice and they update regularly with new and old films. I also sometimes just get the sudden urge to rewatch a film so there isn't any one way I choose what to watch.

    Had a very 80s day:

    Romancing the Stone
    Desperately Seeking Susan
    Valley Girl

Fairly surprised I hadn't already seen them.

Second best collaboration between Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito.

saw Valley Girl for the first time a few weeks back, it was weird seeing Nick Cage be charming and kinda hot

Weakest of the 3 I saw today, but kinda nice to see an 80s teen sex comedy from the female perspective. The more male-focused ones tend to fall a little short for me, because they're all groin no heart. This one had a better balance, dated as it was.

Plus the aging hippie parents were awesome.

Hah I haven't seen The War of the Roses, but DeVito's work seems maybe a little sour for me. I did love Romancing. I know it was made to rip off Raiders of the Lost Ark, but that Zemeckis sense of humor and set-pieces makes it work as its own thing.

I have only seen one other film directed by DeVito so I really can't comment on whatever else he has done but I adore The War of the Roses.

I have to watch The Circle tonight for work. I know nothing about James Pondsolt but Dave Eggers is pretty cool I guess.

Ohhhh, that guy. I didn't have much interest in Spectacular Now but I did want to see End of the Tour, I just never got around to it.
