Beyond literally retaining the titles, do you think you're able to process every movie properly? At the end of the week when you write these summaries, do you ever have a hard time remembering what you thought specifically?

Hey I was just wondering, are you a fan of all the movies and shows that you find information/updates on and post in their threads? Or do you just like reading about stuff?

That is close enough to the ending.

It is certainly cheesy, and Magnolia is nowhere near Anderson's recent successes, but it is so good before that. It is a very melodramatic and earnest film, the kind that is almost always too hysterical to be valuable, but the individual stories are so sad that it is worth it.

Magnolia is a goddamn masterpiece and his best.

It's probably his third worst after Hard Eight and Inherent Vice. Worst being relative since they're all great films, but he's done much better. The Master is his best

He pretty much only makes good movies, but Magnolia is the only one I've seen, imo, that has the emotional core at the center of the astute observations and awesome ensembles that his hero Altman did.

I find Magnolia way too heavyhanded. Boogie Nights was at the very least a brilliant Scorcese knockoff

As you have already said, they are all very good (Hard Eight is not though), but Boogie Nights just feels like a practice for what is to come. Depending on the day, I could justify Punch-Drunk Love/There Will Be Blood/The Master as his best, and the others fall into a distinctly lower category. The introduction to Magnolia is deeply stupid, and the ending would be embarrassing in most other movies, but the rawness in the different stories is some of the best in film. The cop on the date, the gay ex-child star, the game show host, all devastating. Boogie Nights starts to feel long when it goes into the downfall of Dirk Diggler.

I disagree, the major fault is the overt loveletter to Scorcese, but it's a generally tight film for the length. The characterization and choices of cinemetography and music are far, far beyond that of a typical first film
Magnolia is covered in film school slime. Pieces of it are PTA brilliant, I just don't think it flows as smoothly as his others. The length feels as long as it is. I could watch Boogie Nights from any part and it flies. Similar to Goodfellas

PTA is maybe my absolute favorite. So I will be watching Magnolia in full at some point.

The Master is so deeply affecting that I don't trust anyone who doesn't like it. It's probably the best film of the decade, that I've seen.

  19. Gag reel for Deadpool was pretty underwhelming, and there weren't a lot of other special features on the DVD. But anyway, the movie itself is just as much fun the second time around, so that's cool.

    Come and Find Me

A little thriller with Aaron Paul where his girlfriend mysteriously goes missing in the middle of the night. His search for her digs up dangerous secrets that people are willing to kill him in order to keep hidden.

    It was pretty good.

I'm not sure why this has such a negative reputation. It's by no means top Spielberg, but I think it's a pretty moving film beyond its blockbuster/disaster film trappings. Way more dour and meditative than I expected.

I was pretty wowed by the first half of the film, particularly the first appearance of the aliens, just great artistry from probably the greatest director of action in cinema history.

Once Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning get to Tim Robbins' basement it started to lose me a bit, but I still enjoyed the film a lot.

    Logan - 9.5/10
    Miller’s Crossing - 8/10
    Mississippi Burning - 9/10
    Serpico - 9/10
    Dog Day Afternoon - 9.5/10
    The Crow - 8.5/10
    Marathon Man - 8/10

Another stellar week and reached a milestone, now watched more films than I did over all of last year. Logan was stunning but also quite a sad moment as it has brought to an end a 17 year journey of films which granted weren't all great but growing up with said films and X-Men being my first superhero film (subsequently getting me into the genre) did make the film all the more significant for me. Miller’s Crossing was solid enough with Gabriel Byrne once again showing how underrated he is. Mississippi Burning though problematic in the sense of having no lead non-white character despite dealing with the violence of the civil rights era still showed off the horrors of racism in the 60s with great performances by Hackman and Dafoe. Finally got round to watching the two collaborations by Pacino and Lumet and they did not disappoint, Dog Day Afternoon in particular as I can see that becoming a favourite of mine. Indulged in a rewatch of The Crow which still has plenty going for it despite repeated viewings and some CGI which hasn't aged well. Finally ended the week with another 70s film I have been wanting to watch for a while and though narratively it isn't the strongest the performances alone make this a worthy watch and once again Roy Scheider excels, his filmography from that time easily puts him up there for me as one of the best from the 70s.

some varied movies set in France

I liked Beauty and The Beast a lot, cast was excellent and those songs will always get to me

Kristen Stewart is wonderful in Personal Shopper

Marie Antoinette might be my favorite Sofia Coppola believe it or not, need to see Virgin Suicides and Somewhere and rewatch Lost In Translation again when I'm not let down by the hype, I love stuff like Marie Antoinette and Here Lies Love that portray vilified characters sympathetically, I had no idea that she was taken away at her family at 14 to basically be a political pawn and baby making machine, and Kirsten Dunst is the best and hey Rose Byrne Tom Hardy and Molly Shannon are also there
