Not going to waste two hours on something that someone I trust put on a level with Movie 43 and Entourage while also looking exactly like the gross out crap that has come before failed to conjure up a laugh or be completely uninteresting. Like I said earlier, I hate watching unfunny comedies. I would rather watch the abomination that is Cell before watching an unfunny comedy film.
Yeah, if consensus opinion is what you're going to use to decide how you feel about a movie, why watch anything at all?
personally I find it fascinating when people who's opinion I respect hated a movie I loved or vice versa, how can Roger Ebert have hated Wet Hot American Summer for instance
It's fine to not watch it but then...don't talk about it? It's a safe bet I'm going to hate The Captive. And that I'll never watch Gummo or Trash Humpers. But I also can't shit on them until I do.
Probably because it's just okay. I know this means Spo will egg my house, but yeah. Nope. It sucked. Well, not sucked. It was like a 5-6 out of 10
I only brought up two aspects about it that stood out amongst all the things I read about it as I don't see how they could be considered hilarious, I never sought to fully criticize the film.
I'd always been meaning to see more of Van Sant's work, having shamefully only seen Good Will Hunting and Milk. Inspired by @brandon_260 and @Morrissey vouching for his filmography, I watched Drugstore Cowboy last night. Pretty good! Excited to do My Own Private Idaho next. Amazing hair performance from Matt Dillon though. One of the greatest hair performances of all time maybe? What a hottie.
somehow have only seen Good Will Hunting Milk and Restless by Van Sant, made better by the fact that I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who's seen Restless
oooh totally forgot he did Milk too. Still can't really decide how I feel about that one. I remember liking it a good amount, mostly for Brolin but it's been a bit
Van Sant is all over the place. He had a great run in the middle of the last decade with Elephant, Gerry, and Last Days, but then he makes stuff like You're The Man Now Dog and Restless. The suicide forest movie that played at Cannes is supposed to be terrible.
I saw like 30 minutes of that fracking movie he did with Matt Damon and fell asleep. His next project has a promising cast at least. Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, Jonah Hill, and Jack Black are attached so maybe we could get a return to form?
George Washington - pretty good. wonderfully atmospheric, but this is a rare case where i think a film could do with a little more plot going on. normally that's fine, or even preferable for me, but i think for this it lack a little cohesive tissue as a result and struggled to meaningfully develop how the characters responded to the conflict.
I think it's OK if you don't want to watch something because you think it would be a waste of time. You could be right or wrong obviously. Trying to say you know what a film is without putting the time in to know for your self is obviously silly. I also think that if a minority group has been vocal that a film is oppressive, then there's a conversation to be had here in all of this regarding how the film should be viewed and recieved. Idk if that was brought up. Idk anything about this movie.
