How can you claim what it is without ever laying your eyes on it??

Because professional reviews and audience reviews have both said the same thing, that is how.

IMDb, the site where people rate movies before they come out? The movie was a pretty big financial success. Of course, this is almost never indicative of a film's quality.

I have no idea what is "clear" about the idea that I like to go against the general consensus. There is obviously no evidence of that and a weird thing to bring up.

Wouldn't call a film that couldn't beat films more than a month old at the box office a "success" and you wouldn't bring up some nonsensical bullshit about hive minds and how you are impervious to such a thing if you didn't like to go against the general consensus.

When a majority is saying so and not by a slim margin then that is hard to ignore and if you think I am going to waste time on an unfunny comedy just to find out the obvious then don't bother.

If a film costs 11 million to make and makes almost 100 million dollars in theaters, it is a success. You are arguing against math.

I don't know what is nonsensical about hive minds. The idea behind hive minds is that a lot of people follow the leader and let it sway their views. You should know what a hive mind is; you are literally citing other people's opinion to make up your own.

What leader would that be? What critic does everyone follow and make up their minds based on said critics viewpoint? No such person exists, you want to talk about arguing against math and yet ignore the fact that people have universally stated the same things about that film. No hive mind bullshit there, just people coming to the same clearly justified conclusion.

I know a lot of people who call the Transformers films bad, sexist, racist, etc. I doubt I'll ever see them. But I'm not berating people for watching or liking them because I haven't seen them, it'd be ridiculous to condemn someone for enjoying a movie I haven't seen.

When Freaks came out people overwhelmingly called it disgusting and abhorrent and morally repugnant. They were wrong.

I have already answered this. DeNiro's recent reputation + January release + critics = people writing off the film. You have already admitted you won't see it because of the reaction of others, so I don't understand arguing this.

There was no universality; I decided to see the film because of positive comments about the film. This was stated already.

Not just talking about critics though and the consensus is unanimously in favour of it being a poor film. You might like to assume you know why it was panned but the reasons are simple, bad film gets a bad critical reception. Not complicated.

But it isn't unanimous because we are having this conversation. That is the entire point.

They were...but Freaks also isn't very good.

Now if we're talking The Unknown...

Hard to ignore that most people haven't liked the film, if it was practically an even split then you would have a point and that would mean I would have to watch it but when the consensus is so heavily weighted to one side it is utterly pointless for me to do so when American comedies like that have been an utterly miserable experience in the past. Nothing to suggest from the reviews by critics, reviews by audiences, the trailers and anything else I have read to suggest otherwise.

Also I disagree with tetra on just about every possible movie opinion...but it would be dumb as hell to argue with him on a movie I haven't seen.

Freaks, Showgirls, Wet Hot American Summer, and the Shining were all critically panned. All are great. Critics can be wrong. Sometimes all at the same time. Dirty Grandpa may not rank with the listed films, I don't know that I'll ever see it. But I won't know.

Even I had seen it he would of still fallen back on one of his original assumptions that I didn't understand it...

My whole point was made because most people dismissed the film. That was how I prefaced the conversation.

Still. You love movies that get so-so reviews all the time. You post about them in here. You know better than anyone that sometimes the consensus is wrong.

You are right, I do love movies that haven't been well received but what I don't do is ignore the faults in said films nor do I go around assuming that people are participating in some hive mind. Quite frankly though can't remember the last film I watched and liked that was as negatively received as Dirty Grandpa.

But you legit don't know if this movie has those faults. By definition, you're following a group/hive consensus because you haven't seen the movie to say otherwise.

I'm struggling to see how so many people can possibly be wrong and come to the same conclusions for the film to be the complete opposite.

Missing satire happens a lot. People misread A Clockwork Orange too.

To be honest, I don't think Dirty Grandpa will be good. I don't like most of the dumb mainstream comedies that cinephiles have been contrarian on (hellooooo Macgruber). But at least watch the fucking thing before you decide that.

MacGruber is a masterpiece. A handful of movies that make me laugh just by thinking about them.
