    The Wave - 8/10
    Goodnight Mommy - 8/10
    The Hateful Eight - 7/10

Much more even week this time though I did finally cave in after 12 films so far this year and rewatch a film but been an interesting week that is for sure.

Saw two of the earliest "musicals" in the way that we think of them today, where the songs are integrated with the action, Love Me Tonight and The Love Parade and really enjoyed them. A lot of early sound films are very stiff but these are fluid, fun and inventive. Chevalier is all charm and his mugging through pre-code raunchiness, silly puns and witty songs is priceless.

Konaanisquatsi doesn't seem like the kind of movie I would normally love, but I was (perhaps surprisingly) really into it. It's very beautiful and very hypnotic and gives you a lot to think about and a lot of time to ponder it. It seems like the filmic equivalent of a zen koan, a riddle with no real solution where just trying to ponder it is an act of finding truth. Philip Glass's score certainly helps. I'm not generally a fan of his work in dramatic films, but his style is perfect for this.

    Ordinary World - 4/10

This is a generous 4 too, only because I'm a Green Day fan, and I'm never going to shit on a movie where the big 'talent show' involves a girl playing Replacements. I was really hoping for something more than your typical mid-life crisis kind of movie, but alas, that's all this is...and the worst part is that it isn't even remotely funny. You have Fred Armesian and you give him literally NO funny lines? Shame. The movie felt like it was written by a 13 year old as every line Bille Joe said was sooooooo childish. There's being an 'immature adult' and then there's like a guy who doesn't know how to read or write. I was hoping for a movie about "a punk guy that's now a dad" movie, with comedy. But this was just a 'wah, my wife forgot my birthday' woah is me? So lame. So bad. I want better

That loneliness is not a function of solitude.

Hell or High Water - 8/10

This movie felt really genuine, from the shitty little towns in Texas to the people that populate them. Jeff Bridges was unsurprisingly great in his role, even if I feel that I've seen him play a similar character once or twice before. Turns out Chris Pine can be a pretty amazing actor as well. While the bank robberies that the brothers the film focuses on commit aren't justified, I could understand why they felt the need to go through with them. Bridges' character (a cop) has a blatant racism toward his half Native American/half Mexican partner that at first comes off as cruel but I later found to be more brotherly and endearing. Again, I don't find the comments that he makes acceptable but I understand that they completely fit his character and am able to like him despite them. Hell or High Water is about flawed people making less-than-perfect decisions to achieve admirable goals, and I can get behind that.

Watched Pete's Dragon (2016) and it was excellent. A little too formulaic but it's Disney so it was expected, still looked fantastic and loved the look for Elliot.

    BFG - 5/10

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. I tried so hard to get into this. Speilberg, slow-dark tone kids/animation movie has my name written all over it, but jesus, this was just so boring. The entire plot wasn't interesting or intriguing enough to care about the character's journeys. After about half the movie is over you realize, shit, so where are we going here? What's the journey/purpose? Just a bunch of running around with a few zany antics. I'm still giving it a 5 because it has the essence of a great movie and I like what they were going for.

It's one of Roald Dhal's weaker books, imo.

Honestly surprised Spielberg wrung as much out of it as he did.

The BFG is my personal favorite of his books honestly.

Actually have the movie checked out ready to watch soon.

I love the book. Spielberg did a solid job and expanded the story of the novel nicely. But it was also susceptible to that particular Disney thing where they do amazing work with motion capture, but then the CG itself is always underwhelming.

The BFG felt like the longest movie of last year. A few great Spielberg shots, but little else.

Honestly, I didn't see where all the hype came from. Sure, it was cool to see how a human linguistic professional would attempt to communicate with a species that doesn't use sound to communicate, but the ending was cheap and I don't know, just not very good.

Gloriously stupid. Instead of Bruce Lee's master being avenged it's one of the worlds most adorable puppies.

Plot is secondary to the gun fu, which is sublime.

Disney version. I could speak for at least an hour on what makes it great. I watched it 2 or 3 times a day for a couple years when I was a kid, and I still see something I never did before each time I watch it.

Realised the only film I had seen from the original Star Trek film series was The Wrath of Khan so sought to correct that and the series is pretty solid as a whole with only the fifth film being a disappointment. A film that didn't disappointment however was High-Rise, really liked it but feel it would be even better upon second viewing.

  22. Rewatched Scott Pilgrim for the first time in like five years. I feel like I appreciate it a little more now that I'm older, but I'm not really sure exactly why. Maybe it's just where I'm at in my life right now. I used to like it just for the flashy visuals and quirky humor, now I like it for its story and themes (and its flashy visuals and quirky humor). And now I'm like whoa that's Superman/The Atom, and that's April Ludgate! haha

I quite liked Blackhat. There is nobody in the world who can shoot a city at night like Michael Mann.

Also saw What's Up, Doc? And holy shit was it wonderful. Beautifully nailed the screwball comedy genre. Verbal gags, visual gags, slapstick gags, cute homages. It really just hits checkbox after checkbox

Most comedies get stale after a watch or two, but this is one of the few that makes me laugh every time I watch it.

It Follows is on Netflix now, so figured it was time for a rewatch. Can confirm it's still a damn near perfect horror flick.
