You know, I thought the singing scenes were eye-roll worthy when I was watching it, but afterward I thought about it, and considering the whole movie, I think those scenes worked really well
Aquarius is an important film, especially given how angrily the Brazilian coup government has responded to it. If we can define 2016 as the rise of global hard-right nationalist movements, Aquarius is an important example of a protest film.
Two Step - 6/10. One of those cases where the story is told well, but by the end of it I'm not sure why it's a story worth being told
Had a marathon today: The Court Jester The Inspector General Song of the Sea Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959) It's Always Fair Weather Broadway Melody of 1940 The Muse
A Very Murray Christmas was everything I expected it to be, in that I had no idea what to expect. It's so odd, and I don't know how to feel about it, but I think that's all part of its charm. Like, equal parts happy and melancholy, or maybe a little more of the latter.
A masterpiece. It is a perfect movie for people who are not enamored with the sentimentality of Christmas.
The Voices - 8/10. Has one of the most brilliant third acts I've seen in a while. Ryan Reynolds is fantastic.
watched F is For Fake while at work, i dont think i absorbed as much of it as i would of at home but might try again Stalker today.
Shaun the Sheep Movie: 7/10. Only the second Aardman Production I've seen, having watched Arthur Christmas earlier in the month. A lot of the gags got a smile out of me, and I'm a sucker for stop motion, but I'm not really a laugher, so I'm not sure I can justify giving it a higher rating since it's a pretty pure comedy. The story telling that was there was told well, but that's because it was a simple story that made for a lot of clever visual jokes. A fun watch, but I'm not sure I'd watch it again - not by myself at least.
Planning on it. Wondering how I watched Angry Kid growing up, but managed to avoid Wallace and Gromit
I've never seen Angry Kid, but I think I should change that. Wallace and Gromit is an all time favorite though. Do yourself a favor and check their stuff out.
Now You See Me 2 8/10. While there'd were some goofy things in this I thouroughly enjoyed this and am excited for another installment
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - 8/10 This is far better than The Force Awakens, it is also more enjoyable and I found myself actually enjoying this immensely in several parts as well which is a rarity with this franchise. By far and away the two best things for me with this film was that it firstly wasn't constantly looking back at what has come before like TFA was and secondly the action was easily the best in the franchise. The battle on Scarif was genuinely incredible and surprised me because I have generally found the action in previous Star Wars films to be a bit tepid. The cast was also really good, the score by Michael Giacchino was great and as per usual they nail it with a robot character who was the only light relief in this relatively darker entry in the franchise. Only major flaws really are knowing for most of it what is going to happen narratively and it coming across as filler.
The Lego Movie: 8/10. So fun, and the way they decided to animate some of the elements to make them fit into the Lego world was super smart. Zootopia: 9/10. Beautifully expressive animation paired with a solid, compelling story and complemented by clever jokes throughout. I think I preferred this to the Lego Movie because I'm more of a story guy, and Zootopia's priority seemed to be telling its story well, whereas the Lego Movie's priority was to make the audience laugh. Both were great though, I shouldn't even be comparing them.
We saw it twice in Theaters. The first time we sat next to children that didn't know how to behave and a mom that didn't do shit about it. So we went again at our local drive-in thinking maybe the experience affected it but we just ended up getting bored most of the time and just didn't think it was anything special or the story was anything spectacular or anything. It's actually one of the few movies of the past few years that I have really not wanted to go back to revisit. Maybe hype was a factor? I really don't know. I will say though, now that I have a kid I'll let him watch it if he ever feels like it but I'm not likely to go out of my way to suggest it though. I am looking forward to Lego Batman though
Silence - 10/10 Further proof that Martin Scorsese is still one of the best directors alive right now. Brutal, ambitious, intimate examination of what terms like 'faith' and 'devotion' actually mean. Lawrence of Arabia - 8/10 Never seen it before, got to see it at the Egyptian on a 70mm print! Had to move from my decent spot in the back to some of the more open seats in the front since my restless leg was killing me. Also, hard not to be exhausted by the sheer legnth of the thing, fell asleep for a couple minutes in the second half. Also, I think the first half is better than second in general. Still, I think it earns its legnth for the most part, and the scope of it all is still awe-inspiring.
