Not in any kind of efficient way. But I have like 80-something percent of all the picture and acting nominees ever
Generally, the zeitgeist-y films of the late 60s don't connect with me, but Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice is really good. I'm a huge Natalie Wood fan anyway, but what a ballsy move for her. It seemed like it would be silly. 60s free-love jargon, half-century-old psychology, the whole "wife-swapping movie" conceit. But it was very well-written with human characters and never sacrificing quality just to get in a satirical jab.
There are still a few contenders, but it is hard to imagine something topping The Neon Demon for worst film of the year. While Drive had its problems, in hindsight it was an important film because it gave Refn the license to pursue the worst aspects of his career to their logical conclusion. Someone vomiting up an eyeball and then another person eating it is supposed to be shocking, but what Refn never learned from the filmmakers that influenced him is that extreme acts on the screen are supposed to be backed up by moral, philosophical, and political meaning. He takes the most tired of storylines (young girl goes to Hollywood and sees how empty it is) and somehow makes it worse than many of the imitators.
I kind of just turned my brain off and stared at all the pretty eye candy with that one. Totally worth the price of a matinee ticket.
Showgirls is Showgirls. Trying to ape Showgirls is a different manner. I would agree that it is his best since Drive, but that is a low bar since the only other film in between was Only God Forgives, which is awful. All three are bad, but Only God Forgives is a very strong Worst of the Decade contender.
any time someone tells me they like Only God Forgives I just have to assume they are full of shit and wanna seem like they get something really deep in that empty ass film
Man, Batman v Superman really is that bad. You could make a really good movie off the through-line of the fall-out of the destruction heroes like Superman cause in these movies. They just didn't make it. Rogue One was wonderful. Everything I wanted from that movie.
The good, the bad, and the ugly 9.5/10. Greatest western epic ever made...and that theme song makes me laugh my ass off, don't ask me why.
How has tetra not worked out how to watch refn films yet. why are you looking for deep meaning? .every.single.time. its a straight forward story, told visually, climaxing with violence. even new star wars gets it and ripped the asthetic off Valhalla rising with Mad's cheeks wooo
There is no secret in how to watch a Refn film. You hit play just like anything else. The difference comes from the quality of what comes after you hit that play button; with some directors, you regret hitting that button.
I think Bronson is the only Refn film I've seen, but how is his older work? (Fear X, Bleeder, Pusher) - Those films looked to be the most interesting of his work to me.
I watch every film not looking for a deeper meaning and just take it at face value. 90% of the time I'd say I come away entertained.
The extended version is... better. I still wouldn't call it a good superhero movie, but at least it apparently fixes most of the problems the theatrical version had with the narrative. (I didn't see the theatrical version, I only read about what the differences were.)
if you need your films to have trival things like acting, complex charaters, meaning or clever dialogue refn isnt for you. if your down for a violent visual story with A E S T H E T I C S tho. havnt seen these
Everything I've heard about this has been terrible but these are pretty much my thoughts towards it having not seen it yet.
it is a movie about teenage canadian girls trying to stop german nazi brautwursts so i wouldnt expect the reviews to be too hot for what it is, it's not great, but it's definitely not unwatchable. I dug the singing actually
