Don't Look Now is more or less universally considered a masterpiece. It is definitely worth watching whether or not you know the plot.

there are certainly folks who don't like it, but i think it is worth understanding its significance and influence if only to appreciate how innovative it was. i would say that plot is secondary to themes themselves, but that's not a bad thing (I often think it's a good thing when done right)

What the other guy said and I have to be honest I didn't like the film straight away, took a few viewings for me to process and appreciate more of the film but eventually became my favorite horror film.

  8. Rewatched Zombieland, on DVD with director's commentary and subtitles for the movie dialogue. It's hard for me to listen and read two different things at the same time, sometimes I'd lose track of both and just zone out, but the commentary certainly enriched the experience. Some of the deleted scenes were also pretty cool. The movie itself is always good zombie-killing fun. Since I've already seen the movie for its spectacle, I paid more attention to the characters this time.

Rewatched Coraline (on DVD but without commentary). It's creepier than I remember. I appreciated the addition of Wybie a lot more this time around; I used to think he didn't belong in the movie because he wasn't in the book, but he really does add something special to the story. Conversely, when the movie was announced, I was initially excited to hear that Dakota Fanning was cast as Coraline, but I didn't enjoy her performance as much this time.

Watched The Babadook on Netflix and wow. Best horror I've seen in a long time. Granted, I'm not a huge fan of the genre, so I don't watch very much of it/don't have a lot to compare it to. But when it's done right, I gotta say, it's done right. I love how at its core it's a family drama. And I love that it doesn't show everything, which just makes it that much more terrifying. The two leads are just fantastic. I thought the kid was annoying at first (I guess that's the point), but towards the end he was just killing it.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, Zombieland, Coraline, The Babadook. Vampires, zombies, other mothers, and, um, something else. Happy Halloween!

My roommates and I kicked off what we've deemed "teen movie month" with Eurotrip. This movie goes to show that it's really the cast that sells the kind of dialogue and ridiculous scenes found in these types of comedies. It's truly funny and one of my favourite road trip movies. 8/10

Also, I showed my roommates Clue. Given the last two weeks, I'm on track to watch Clue every week for the rest of my life, and I don't think I have a problem with that

I've never seen Clue but I see it's got Tim Curry and Christopher Lloyd in it. So I'm a little interested knowing that. Those guys are the best

It's my favorite Tim Curry role.

The cast is just stupid-packed with comic awesomeness. Lesley Ann Warren, Eileen Brennan and Madeline Kahn are all treasures.

just watched Antichrist for the second time and it was infinitely more rewarding this time around.

it's too bad the film is written off as shock material, because it's an unbelievably beautiful and dense film. of course, it's very unapologetically von Trier, hence the rather harrowing second half, but man, what an inventive and thoughtful experience.

Queen of Katwe was a good solid entry in the Disney-inspirational-sports genre. I like Mira Nair and she adds just enough directorial quality to it to prevent it from being too rote. David Oyelowo gives a really charming performance, too.

And I fucking LOVED Moonlight. Powerful. Artful. Surprisingly funny. Well-acted across the board. One of my favorites of the year so far.

    V For Vendetta - 8.5/10

A film that sadly continues to be relevant and shows how easy it is to sleepwalk into something simply out of fear. The fact that few see this piece of fiction slowly become reality is utterly terrifying.

    Hacksaw Ridge (2016)

The wiki for Dessmond Doss reads like an embellished folk hero tale of a mythical pacifist hero sent from above to rescue Americans. This isn't a story of a complex man struggling with a dark side, he just consistently stands up for his beliefs and goes well beyond the call of duty, he/the films openly preaches for Christianity but not going to try and fault his ideologies well its producing glorious results, and from the interviews with him at the end it seemed he genuinely held those views and were a major influence behind his actions/character. Strange that im normally on here criticizing one dimensional super hero characters but doesnt really ring true when they were real.

the movie itself has 2 distinct parts very familiar to war films. we got a cheesy home story/basic training "i gotsta do ma part", kiss a girl, training montage etc. Vince Vaughan shines as the asshole sergeant, ive heard his an asshole in real life but its all paying off now cause he nailed it. This part seemed very standard with fam troubles & hazing while always sticking to his convictions, and the court room scene slipped into melodrama imo. Act 2 shifts from zero to 100 almost instantly with an assault of graphic violence, just waves and waves of blood and explosions crashing into you which never really lets up and continues for another hour or so as he just keeps miraculously saving people in the face of death.

Its sort of an inverse Saving Private Ryan, where instead Ryan saved everyone else then lives and goes on to to live a long life with his beloved wife true story the end.

while i enojoyed Passion and Apocolypto more lets hope this is Mel getting his life back together and back to directing

Hacksaw was pretty rusty up until Garfield shows up, at which point it gets very good. Powerful and visceral, offsetting the war elements that you've seen before

Denial was really strong. Weisz and Spall are perfect actors. Given a pretty notable current event that's taken up the last year, it might have hit especially hard to see this movie about an accomplished, intelligent woman forced to legitimately engage with a narcissistic bigot.

I was actually really unimpressed with this one besides the acting. I found it kind of lifeless. It was definitely pandering toward a Jewish audience a bit, which is fine. But it was also kind of clunkily 90's in the way it hit its marks and I really would have liked more nuts and bolts of them picking him apart at the trial. They also didn't have to work so hard to hammer home the "she's a hero because she refrained from individual heroics" thing. The only real time the movie seemed to have some life and passion was in the way they shot the Auschwitz visit, which already has plenty of gravitas anyway.
