I have all of De Palma's "essential" films downloaded. I also have the doc about him downloaded. Would it be okay to watch the doc first in order to frame his films, or is it better to check out his stuff then watch the doc

It's good to have at least some foundation before seeing the doc. The only thing about seeing the doc before seeing his work is that it gives away some of the technique or twists to his films that lessens the impact when you see the whole work.

I wish I had waited until after I watched his films (I saw about half his works before and half after).

Gotcha. Like I said I've seen Blow Out and am currently watching Phantom of Paradise. I'll check out Dressed to Kill, Sisters and Body Double and then maybe the doc.

Really loved Phantom of the Paradise. I have to say, the opening Juicy Fruits song and the Beach Boys knockoff are better than 99% of the songs I've heard this year.

Thank the legendary Paul Williams for that. Also wrote "Rainbow Connection" and is on my favorite songs on Random Access Memories.

Which, maybe you already knew and I'm just being pedantic, but I'm a fan of him.

    Lincoln (2012)

As Lincoln softly slams his opponent with "Nothing surprises you, Asa, therefore nothing about you is surprising" well nobody's surprised that DDL nails the part yet at the same time no-ones surprised by a Spielberg film. Im not going to claim Spielberg ruined modern cinema he just makes safe movies so i guess choosing a historical political drama about a well loved character makes sense. Maybe political dramas arnt my thing but watching someone count votes is crazy boring especially when the outcome is predetermined by history and adding a string crescendo only highlights the fact that visually nothing is happening. Adding to this mess the crescendo was so overwhelming you couldnt hear people whisper "only __ votes to win" instead we are shown multiple people scribbling down "11 votes to win" "8 votes to win" etc which makes no sense why theyd do that and they had no other numbers crossed out. Aside from DDL the small amount of civil war action was the best part, muddy brutal bodies cruelling as the tear each other and the nation apart, touching stuff and you can see its effect eating away at DDL. the stuff with Jogolevs was melodramatic with no pay off, liked the stuff with his post mourning crazys wife and was probably one of the only relationships with real feeling, kid was nothing but didnt take up much time, procuring the votes was lame and montagey, Tommy Lee Jones looked ridiculous. Watching DDLs perforamce makes this bearable, cool speaches and stories, walkin stalkin around funny, big hat.

The ending was surprising though, because i was interested to see how he'd shoot it pew pew, and instead i saw a boy cry at a different play. surprise doesnt capture it properly but i dont think theres one word for unexpected yet boring, maybe its just disappointed. you fucking know it was 2 and half hours.

    Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter (2012)

Surprised again! At how unentertaining this movie was. The combat was all CGI and quick cuts that completely neutered it of any weight which is a major prob in a movie called Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter. why you using CGI for vampires?! they already look great with simple practical effects i didnt need wierd exaggerated vampire steroid monsters, even bad practical effect can be fun. This was souless and empty.
The premise of vampires using slaves for blood is pretty cool, shows good promise plus an already built in assassination plot . Just do that ezzzz. but instead we get wack ass vampire lore and no assassination. Also its not even funny, i saw it 2 days ago and cant recall any jokes. I do remember them giving me the strings when his baby died. the baby that had literally 2 scenes and existed for maybe 3mins if you count mary todd saying "im pregnant". then he plays with blocks, then the vampire kills him and im supposed to care??! why are you trying to make me care in Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter. the rest if just filled with shitty action cliches (including a train top fight) expected further butchered with trash CGI.

This was such and easy cult slam dunk that got absolutely dumpstered. Next time just get some good fight choreographing, some wires, joke writers and have some fun with it please.

Shin Godzilla was super fun. Refreshing for a franchise with a ridiculous premise to embrace that ridiculousness and be funny and crazy. I've seen some people call a lot of the movie boring, and there are a lot of board room scenes where government officials talk, a lot, and sometimes more about the political and legal ramifications of what they're doing than about the monster destroying Japan, but the pace is so quick and the satire solid enough that I never felt like it was too weighed down. It also served the ultimate thematics well. It's not groundbreaking visually, but it works, often hilariously. Godzilla looks awesome and his powers are fun to watch and it was overall a good time.

The Birth of a Nation was good but not great. Parker's performance was exceptional, but I wasn't as sold on his direction. There were a few beautiful shots, but then a lot of parts that seemed more like playing dress up than anything natural. It was also really powerful in its depictions of cruelty and inhumanity, but there are so many stories of slavery that do that equally well. I feel like the reason to tell Nat Turner's story is for what he brings uniquely: being a preacher, his development into a leader of men, etc, and the movie just doesn't have half as much fire in those parts. So pretty good movie, but a bit of a missed opportunity

I'm pretty sure the director is the guy who directed/wrote Neon Genesis Evangelion.

It is, Hideaki Anno. I've seen like, half of Evangelion, but know a lot of people who revere it. You definitely feel his style and Shin Godzilla is a very different monster movie than has been made before. I appreciated and enjoyed it a lot.

yeah I mean they're great. extremely stylish especially the films. walks a super curvy line between satirical nonsense and any meaning but their are actually some extremely poignant themes about the human condition that you can tell were written by a really weathered person. I enjoyed it and I'm not surprised he made a strange/interesting live action film.

    Girl on a Train - 5/10

Entertaining, soap-opera, trashy romantic novel type movie right here. I was digging it for the first half, but then all of a sudden the movie became sort of comical in its soap-opera ways. I didn't even find Emily Blunt's performance to be that great. Her "crazy acting" was hilarious. If that was intentional, than kudos to her. I went into this without reading the reviews and was anticipating something much better (maybe something on the Gone Girl level or preferably Side Effects level), but coming out, and then seeing the reviews, I realize that those expectations were unwarranted. A five is fair because I was pretty entertained for most of it, but it's still drivel.

    Money Monster - 3/10

It felt like this movie was made in a week. There's just NOTHING going on in this movie of any worth. It's not insightful, it's not thrilling, it's not interesting. I LIKE movies like John Q, The negotiator, etc. They can be silly, but at the very least you get a fun twist and you get suspense. This is just NOTHING. I mean....there's nothing else i can say. This movie isn't anything.

The Alchemist Cookbook left an impression. I don't think I've yet come away from a Joel Potrykus film really loving the work, but I've been really impressed with both this and Buzzards, and the more I think about Cookbook the more I'm into it. Really fantastically crafted psychological stuff, he's able to make the whole thing feel warmly human while including a couple literally spine-chilling sequences.
