Devin Faraci was chased off Twitter a few months back for the same thing. He was part of the "Bernie Sanders supporters are racists/sexists/homophobes" group and they just went through his feed.
To be clear, was he just a shitty writer who was an asshole about films or did he show signs of the type of shit he did? Being "an asshole" is far, far different than the accusations. I wouldn't call it unsurprising just because the dude was obnoxious online.
Also it appears a lot of cheering on the internet about this dude being outed is coming from Gamergate people whom he attacked. He's scum, a horrible person who should be stripped of any power he holds. With that being said, I think super shitty people are too happy about this happening for terrible reasons.
Been on a bit of a watching run of late: Vidas Secas Foxy Brown Hips, Hips, Hooray Ulee's Gold Deepwater Horizon Inside Daisy Clover Dark Victory 13th Smoke The Inn of the Sixth Happiness A Dry White Season There's No Business Like Show Business The Fabulous Baker Boys Missing The Blue Bird Elmer the great
Late to the party but why watch Stuckman when you can watch Jeremy Johns or the Collider Crew. Stuckman is boring to me and I agree that he doesn't really explain a lot even though he says a lot.
Oh man, you weren't kidding. You should watch the rest of it. He repeatedly refers to "10 Years a Slave"
It doesn't equate with what he's been accused of now, but he's kind of an asshole politically anyway, speaking as someone who followed him until relatively recently. And it's far from only conservatives and reactionaries who dislike him, even dating before this.
The first movie I watched in quite a while is Kiarostami's Taste of Cherry. Initially, it appears that it is going to focus more on the nature of suicidal thoughts and how we reconcile enormous levels of comfort (even in a developing nation like Iran) to the deeper questions of suffering. It instead is more focused on the power of social contact even in deliberately bizarre situations. More exploitative films try to show the depths people will go to for money, but Kiarostami is always more interested in how our personal connections can drastically alter our ability to carry out difficult decisions. It is intentional that Kiarostami portrays a soldier as the most outwardly pacifistic, while an older man who is seemingly devoid of kinetic action is the one most willing to carry out the task of covering up the suicide. Many highlight the Nineties at the height of Kiarostami's talents, but his last two films, removed from Iran, are much more involved, and is unfortunate that that era ended so quickly.
That movie is incredibly powerful. I've always found the meta ending a bit bizarre, but otherwise the best thing I've seen from him, I think.
The ending is so tied to Kiarostami's brand, especially in relation to his other works from the 90s. A more traditional ending might have felt more disconnected, I think.
Kiarostami has many times reminded the audience of the line between fiction and reality. It would have been hard to end it just with the death or the decision to back off of the suicide.
I do know it's kind of his thing. Can't watch Close Up and not pick that up. I just always find it distancing in a way I don't like. I haven't seen The Wind Will Carry Us in a few years but I don't remember it particularly having the meta element
Neon Demon (2016) Nicolas Winding Reifn back at it and embracing his tag line "beauty isn't everything; it's the only thing." although hes inversed some of the ingredients, previously his films portray men redeeming themselves through violence here we see women betraying each other with it. In line with his other works we're still getting skeleton dialogue with lavishing visual displays (perhaps his best yet) that drive a fairly straight forward narrative towards its violent climax. Admittedly im pretty ignorant about the fashion industry and shouldn't bother commenting too much on weather its an accurate or worthwhile criticism of the industry but im guessing its not and the film works more to look at the over emphasis we place on beauty(lol coming from u Nick) and self-worth then the destructive, jealous and cannibalistic behavior it brings out particularly in young women. I hate that it's like this, I feel for you and I don't know what it's like with a skirt on so pardon me if I am being insensitive but darling this only worsens. Those girls aint being real persons. Good to see Reifn bounce back from the hot mess of Only God Forgives, im not sure he learnt his lesson as stylistically its his most similar, but the style was not the problem this movie is visually stunning and this time his themes happened to work better.
Faraci stepped down as EIC at Birth.Movies.Death: Birth.Movies.Death Editor-in-Chief Devin Faraci Steps Down After Sexual Assault Allegations Surface
The words of the woman he assaulted She also took down the initial tweet to him "because it's become a focal point for some really vile stuff that i don't feel is in any way in touch with what actually happened".
Good to hear that she's accepted his plea for remorse and is hopefully able to get closure. Really hope he's able to get help too.
I like Amy Nicholson and the Canon and wouldn't mind seeing it with a new co-host but given the circumstances it'd be hard to just resume it.
Yeah I'm a big fan of her and the podcast. He was always a bit much but I've enjoyed it since it started.
