Another Time, Another Place - 7/10 Amélie - 9.5/10 Wandering Ginza Butterfly - 8/10 Wandering Ginza Butterfly 2: She-Cat Gambler - 8/10 A Canterbury Tale - 7/10
Ratings are for you. If you watch thousands of movies, you forget some, and the rating is a reminder of how you felt. Straining for objectivity is pointless.
I watched The Devil's Wears Prada for the first time ever, went into this completely blind and I really enjoyed it!! Looking forward to the sequel!
Relaxer - 6.5/10 file this one under "movies you can smell" Total Recall (1990) - 8/10 Only God Forgives - 6/10 Not nearly as bad as its reputation, but also relatively substanceless until the last 15 minutes or so. Obviously delivers in the neon department, and the score is beautiful. Just fails to leave much of any lasting impact, but then again, following up Drive was always going to be difficult. Lost River - 7.5/10 They put Gosling in director jail for this?? It's obviously a pastiche of Refn and Korine and Lynch with a little Cronenberg sprinkled in for good measure, but there are much worse directors to take inspiration from. Free my man and let him direct another original screenplay so he can lose money instead of coming back for Barbie 2
The Court Jester - 8/10 The Benchwarmers - 4/10 Peter Ibbetson - 8/10 Ivy (1947) - 7.5/10 Delicatessen - 8/10 I have now watched 250 films, only 36 of which I have rated 5/10 or less, so this year has been great so far.
I had no idea that The Court Jester was a musical going into it, so not only was that a surprise but so was the fact I enjoyed it given I am not typically a fan of the genre.
It's by far the best I've ever seen a movie use Danny Kaye's particular talents. The songs are suited to him, the jokes land, the direction and pace are great, etc.
Wind Chill - 5/10 The Island of Dr. Moreau (1977) - 6.5/10 The Town That Dreaded Sundown (1976) - 7/10 Self Reliance - 6.5/10 Monster from Green Hell - 5/10
He's great in White Christmas with Bing Crosby and he does a nice job headlining Hans Christian Andersen and Wonder Man (where he plays twins).
Lust, Caution - 9/10 The Brain from Planet Arous - 6.5/10 Code 3 - 8/10 Giant from the Unknown - 5.5/10 Missile to the Moon - 6/10
I watched Elf for the first time today. A lot of people clown on Shyamalan for making himself the savior in Lady in the Water but Jon Favreau making himself a doctor is even worse.
Father's Day (2011) - 8.5/10 Very funny, and also supremely fucked up (complimentary) Five Nights at Freddy's 2 - 3.5/10 I don't know what I expected. I have zero attachment to the lore or games. The first one felt like serviceable teen horror, but almost nothing happens in this film that unfortunately features very capable actors. Scooby-Doo-ass ending. M.O.M. Mothers of Monsters - 4/10 A film so desperate to be taken seriously that they include a 1-800 number for abuse during the credits while simultaneously scoring it all with a pop-rap song about apologizing to your mom...this shit was wack The Little Shop of Horrors (1986) - 7.5/10 I am occasionally allergic to musicals but enjoyed this much more on second watch. The puppetry is incredible, and Martin and Murray's scene is so unhinged. Alternate ending would likely earn a full extra star, absolutely criminal that they were forced to reshoot. Buzzard - 7.5/10 The spaghetti scene goes on a little long, and I'm not exactly sure why this is on Shudder, but I'm glad to have made the Potrykus journey. This is essential independent slacker cinema.
Frank Oz is such an underrated director of interesting mid-level comedies. The fact that a studio paid for that Martin/Murray scene is a miracle.
Frankenstein’s Daughter - 6/10 The Drama - 8/10 The Devil’s Backbone - 8/10 A Matter of Life and Death - 9/10 California Schemin’ - 8/10
Just got home after seeing a re release of Jurassic Park in the cinema as part of Steven Spielberg season which they r re releasing this, The Lost World, E.T. and Jaws on the big screen weekly in UK cinemas but anyways I haven't seen Jurassic Park in the cinema since I was kid when I watched it on the big screen on opening weekend but anyways it's still an incredible and magical film after all this time and they must of did a 4k restoration because honestly it still holds up after all this time and makes the Jurassic World films look like a bag of shit.. well not Rebirth I liked that one! Anyways I am looking forward to watching the Akira 30th anniversary 4K re release in the cinema this weekend as well as Lee Corin's The Mummy!
