Years ago. I remember having a good time with it but also being disturbed and looking past things that are normally big movie no-nos for me lol. Guess I’ll find out soon if it still works for me.

Good Boy - Definitely an interesting experience, but more so as an experiment in film making than a great narrative story. There’s a ton of interesting ways they edit, frame, and use prospective to get around the constraints they had and also to really put you into the point of view of a dog. It also is striving for something more than just the gimmick of shooting from a dogs point of view. Without giving too much away, it uses that to explore our relationship with our pets and puts a twist on a dogs ability to sense things going on with ourselves that we can’t see or feel.

It is still rough at times. It’s a very short movie, but it doesn’t always feel like it. There’s some pretty bad examples of telling and not showing. Though I’m willing to forgive that a bit because I’m sure it some of that was down to budgeting constraints. The biggest weakness is the relationship between the main human character and the dog. There’s a montage and one other small scene, but often the human just seems like an asshole to his dog and it ends up hurting the movie.

The Life of Chuck - 3/10
I was super disappointed. Stephen King is my favorite author and I like what I’ve seen of Mike Flanagan’s work…but I didn’t care for this. It tried to be really profound and philosophical, but it didn’t land it. I liked the dancing though.

  9. i loved it. i haven't read the story but i don't think the movie was actually trying to be that deep. most ppl on here seem to agree with you tho

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle - 9.5/10
    Wow.
I still think the anime is overrated, but this was so hype. The animation was mind blowing. The music and the fights were amazing too. I was disappointed when I read the last arc would be a movie trilogy, but the 2.5 hours flew by. It was essentially 3 big fights and flashbacks that fleshed out characters. But if you’re already a fan of the series, you know what you’re getting into…top tier fights and less emphasis on plot. Better than Demon Train. The CGI was really well done and actually enhanced the animation instead of looking phoned in. Every scene in the castle felt lifelike. If you like the series, see it before it leaves theaters, since Crunchyroll won’t be getting it…which is super surprising.

Insane performances and script. I’ve only seen Poor Things by this director and I enjoyed that. Loved this too. If you haven’t seen it yet, go in blind like I did.
There was a point in the movie where I thought wouldn’t it be crazy if it turned out she actually was an alien. As soon as she broke out of the ambulance, I knew I was right haha..

I watched this film for the second time in theaters. It’s my personal favorite of the entire year. It also won Best Narrative Feature at the Golden Horse festival.

Set in 1950s Taiwan during the martial law period, a young girl (A-Yue) learns that her brother has been executed by the secret police and travels to Taipei in an attempt to raise money and retrieve his body for burial. Along the way, she befriends a rickshaw driver, a former soldier harassed by the secret police for his perceived connections to the Chinese Communist Party.

Beautiful sets, a surprisingly intimate story, and a great soundtrack.

    Overall, i’d give it a 9.5/10

    Merv - 1/10.
Absolute snoozefest. Love Zooey Deschanel but would think she's a new girl to acting watching this. No chemistry between the leads. Predictable. Dry. Dumb.

    The Roses - 5.5/10
Predictable and lacking any REAL funny; kind of a waste of both Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Coleman.

we watched it with my partner's family recently, and my first thought after finishing was "i can't believe they made a movie where all of the cast members had zero chemistry with one another"

I fully agree. I'm also mad at these awards pundits who cant find space to hype Akira Emoto's performance for consideration.

I just walked out of my 3rd showing of this and ended up liking it even more than before, although, the posters they were giving away sold out by the time I arrived at the theater :(

I just realized it during this showing, but as someone who recently flew to the other side of the planet to attend his grandmother’s funeral, there’s something that really resonates with seeing a 15 year old girl travel across Taiwan to retrieve her older brother’s body.

I just simply love the power cinema has

I watched this again. A real comfy slice of life film from ‘84. One of Hou Hsiao-hsien’s best works and considered by many to be the inspiration for My Neighbor Totoro.

Just like Totoro it deals with two kids who go to live with their grandparents in the country side due to their mom being in the hospital (although this is the Taiwanese country side instead of Japan). The girl wears the same pink and white outfit and the story largely focuses on the perception of the world from the pov of the children.

It differs, however, in the way that last part is framed. While the children's POV is focused on the kid-friendly forest spirit in Totoro, the pov of the kids in this film is through both the simple frictions of childhood and the puzzling frustrations of adulthood. Many of the problems the adults face are not explained and you can only understand the parts of conversations that the kids can hear.

There is no true conflict, no villain, no urgency. There’s just nature, summer days, and the simple moments in life that you take on one day at a time.

    9/10

There is no actual Taiwanese trailer so I’m posting a fan made trailer.

  25. Going to try to keep back up in here during the new year. I wound up having to log like 50 films on LB on NYE so I could get an accurate count of everything I watched in 2025. Going to try to get back into the habit of reviewing as I go again to avoid that problem in the future.

    Sisters (DePalma, 1973) - 8/10
One-third Hitchcock homage, one-third comedic crime caper, one-third terrifying reveal about the horrors of man. Way darker, funnier, and more surreal than I was expecting. Margot Kidder was a star.
