Sledgehammer - 6/10 been watching a slew of slashers lately and what I've gleaned from that mostly is that a good majority of them are around the 6 or 7 level, or at least for me. this one is a bit overly long for what I can only surmise wasn't much of a script on paper to begin with but it's fun. ultimately I value that aspect of it most of all
Clowns in a Cornfield - 7.5/10 Good slasher. I went into this blind and didn’t know there were going to be multiple clowns. Interesting this came out in May and not October.
Madhouse - 1.5/10 very cute lead, very cool pastiche, all with a very shitty movie buried underneath. this is so boring that even the moments of impact are all but dulled by the time you get to them. I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone except maybe those who need something to help lull them to sleep. a true skip if there ever was one
I am rewatching Paris Texas for the first time and I am already more in love with it than I was before. It is worth watching again.
I am making a list of classic films that I am going to show someone with very little experience so I figure I might sneak it in there.
It’s beautiful. There are several shots in the first 15 minutes alone that have made me pause and go back
The American Friend looks just as good. I need to run through Muller’s hits, but that means going back to Jarmusch
Return to Horror High - 5.5/10 certainly the worst movie I've ever seen that features a George Clooney performance, while also not being the worst horror movie I've seen this week.
Cecilia - 8/10 Loved this. Marketed as something of a folk horror, it’s actually more of a coming of age drama with fantastical elements (think a wildly toned down Pan’s Labyrinth). It’s slow and has questionable, if not sometimes confusing pacing, but I found it really gripping thanks to how grim and oppressive it felt. It’s from the perspective of a child who loses her grandma, and struggles to make sense of the loss along with the anti-communist, anti-rabbit (you read that right) political climate that sort of seeps into the family and its surroundings. I took an edible before I watched it so it’s possible that played a role, but I found it extremely grim and I definitely wouldn’t recommend it to just anyone, but it’s a great movie and I’m kind of surprised I had never heard of it.
Blood Feast (1963) - 7.5/10 really loved this. it does so much with so little. Criterion should really release it so I can own a copy
