Hush (2016) - 5/10 comes equipped with everything but a truly gripping narrative big ups for the lack of animal violence tho
Weapons is the probably the closest thing to an instant horror classic since NOPE. Pretty similar in structure too - wears its influences on its sleeve while making something really unique within the genre. See it in theaters if you can.
The Master is one of the very last movies I had on my summer rewatch list. The trajectory of director careers is so fascinating; Boogie Nights was a cultural force, but very much a conventional film that owed a lot to Scorsese. He took that level of fame and just went with his personal desires, getting weirder and more obtuse from Magnolia on. The Master is the peak of that, something so unique and something so uninterested in meeting people halfway. Where do people find meaning in the age of atomic bombs and an increasingly discredited formal religion? Whether it is Jonestown or environmentalists, there is room for hustlers and an opportunity for easy marks.
The Changing - 8/10 if you're looking for spooky vibes to get into the Halloween spirit: this one has them in spades.
Paris, Texas - Aesthetically, this was one of the most beautiful movies I’ve seen outside of Malick or Tarkovsky. I could’ve just watched them do nothing but drive around for several more hours. While there were hints from the very beginning, I wasn’t expecting such an unsympathetic character. The more that was revealed, the less I liked (or even really understood) him, and yet I still found myself intrigued and rooting for him up until the climax, when I finally realized that this mystery character I’d become so invested in was actually just selfish, greedy, insatiable; lost, and eager to put his own needs before anybody else. The reveal of his past put the two hours I had gotten to know him in a different light: previous doubt morphed into disgust, and those moments I for some reason looked past (e.g., leaving a child outside of a peep show with “pussy” graffiti) suddenly became unmistakable red flags. I did find myself wondering what the writer’s intent was. Was he meant to be vile, narcissistic? Or was he supposed to be a sort of antihero whose final act was one of heroism (doubtful imo)? The peep show scene, while brilliant in how it was shot, definitely had me pretty disgusted until I looked back and decided he was kind of a piece of shit all along. Anyway, the cinematography and direction were top tier and I’m really excited to watch more Wim Wenders.
Do you still count a movie as seen if you don't really remember it? All I remember of Paris, Texas is that he was talking to his daughter through glass in some sort of strip show.
Because the only part you remember is not remembered correctly, I’m going to say in this case that it’s a no, haha. But then again, that would mean I’ve only see like ten movies in my life because I have an awful memory.
Weapons - 9.5/10 Absolutely loved this and the experience. About 45 minutes into the movie, the screen froze and I thought it was one of those times where I had to be the one to get up and complain to the workers and they fix it. But the lights turned on and a worker came out and shouted there was a tornado in the area and everyone had to leave the theater. The hallways were packed because all the theaters were totally full. Not an empty seat. After 15 minutes, they said the warning was lifted. We could go back and they’d resume the movie, or they could give us a free ticket. My brother took some tickets and we went back. I over heard people say they wanted to see what happened next in the movie and they’d risk a tornado. It was that good.
Chopping Mall - 7 5/10 stretches itself a little thin by the end but it's so much fun that it doesn't even matter just might have to pick up my own copy of this soon thank you. have a nice day
Heretic - 6.5/10 All three actors did amazing. It was alright. It felt like Saw if Jigaw was a redditor.
Madman - 7/10 I can see how a film like Friday the 13th influenced In a Violent Nature but I might argue this informed it even more. so much fun I've really enjoyed this slasher run I've been on lately. Whilst this is not quite as good as The Burning imo, it's very close
