I've always liked them in funny/silly, throwback mode. Intolerable Cruelty is also one of my favorites.

  2. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For feels like it took everything that made the first movie great and over-exaggerated to the point that it was no longer great. It shows that there's a difference between the action/visuals being stylized and over-stylized. I still enjoyed it. I think I prefer Clive Owen as Dwight, but Jamie Chung as Miho. It was good to see Eva Green in this; I'm currently going through Penny Dreadful--she's great in everything I've seen her in. Oh, and Bruce Willis was also in Pulp Fiction, which I saw this morning. Christopher Meloni was also in Man of Steel, which I saw last week. Weird when movies you see in a short time frame do that unexpectedly sometimes.

Sin City 2 is a REALLY interesting case study when it comes to movie sequels or whatever. I absolutely loved the first Sin City. I remember walking out of the theater being thoroughly entertained, and even marveled at the prospect of sequels to come out eventually as well.

But almost a decade later the sequel finally comes out and...well... i have ZEROOOO interest in watching it whatsoever. I can't totally pinpoint to why either? If i really loved the first movie so much, why am i so disinterested in seeing the sequel? I mean i think I have some ideas, but i don't know haha like i never have any desire to sit through it.

also, to be fair...i dont think ive seen the first Sin City since it first came out and I don't really care to rewatch it.

Bachelorette - 7/10. I never knew this movie existed and I laughed way more than I should have.

While Following is nonlinear and efficient, Insomnia is linear and takes its sweet time, making you really feel the, well, insomnia. Pulp Fiction felt more Tarantino-y than Reservoir Dogs, which came out first, and the reverse is true here: Following feels more like a Christopher Nolan film. Coincidentally, in my pursuit of acquainting myself with some of my favorite directors' earlier works (and somewhat randomly watching Sin City 2), I seem to have unexpectedly gone through a film noir(?) marathon. Nolan's films aren't entertaining in the same way as the others, but Following is perhaps the most fascinating of the bunch, and Insomnia had the most impressive performances by the leads.

Apparently, today marks two years since Robin Williams passed. Another coincidence--I didn't know until after I finished Insomnia that I'd watched it on the anniversary of his death. I rewatched Good Will Hunting soon after he died; I think this is the only other film I've seen him in since. It's oddly nice to be reminded that he had this darker side to his roles.

    (Friday evening)
Except for the Mann shenanigans and some black hole nonsense, I thought Interstellar was really good. Probably the most I got out of a Christopher Nolan film emotionally. And of course the music and visuals were top notch. I feel like Nolan always gets good actors, but aside from maybe Heath Ledger, they are never at their best in his films.

    (Friday night)
The last fifteen minutes of Primer are so ridiculously confusing, I had to look up the plot on Wikipedia to fully make sense of it. I'm a sucker for anything time travel-y, but I really appreciate how real science-y and grounded this is compared to other things like Doctor Who that are on a much grander scale. At the center of the film is this moral dilemma played out by the two main characters' opposing views. It's fascinating how the film deals with all these issues so compactly (albeit arguably a bit sloppily in the third act).

    Sicario - 9/10

Didn't enjoy this as much as I did first time round but still a solid thriller.

what a bonkers movie. felt like more could have been done with the younger boys idolizing the main characters, but loved the ending and the timeliness of it all, back then and even now.

I did not enjoy that movie, but I totally get why someone would. Perfect "60s counter culture rebellion" stuff

Apocalypto is one of the most relentlessly brutal movies I've ever seen, but I loved it. Probably one of the best action movies I've ever seen. Gibson may be a psychopath but the man can make a movie. Relentless adrenaline and an interesting look at the abilities of individuals to be heroic even when surrounded by the cowardice and corruption of a declining empire

Monsters was the slow, quiet, walk-through-the woods monster film I was hoping for. Really beautiful scenery, pretty neat visual effects for all the alien stuff. I liked the film both thematically and on a character level. The border wall to keep extraterrestrials out of the US really made me think about how the film applies to today's political discourse.

I didn't know what to expect when I put on Exit Through the Gift Shop. What seemed to start as a documentary about a documentary about street art in general became an account about the rise of the "filmmaker" who became an artist himself. Really entertaining; I was surprised at how funny it was. "I don't know if there is a joke." "I don't know what the moral is."

I'm mostly going through my Netflix watchlist (before I go and add more to it), but I watched Interstellar on Hulu and noticed they have a lot of good classic Criterion Collection stuff I never got around to, like some from Kurosawa and Bergman. There's too much to watch out there.

    The Conjuring 2 - 8.5/10

Went to see this again because my brother had yet to see it and since we saw the first together we thought we would go see this as it was the final showing at my local cinema. I enjoyed it almost as much as the first time round and in some respects more so since I could appreciate more of it knowing how the film was going to pan out. So I could get more out of the sound design, visuals and the camera work for instance plus it still scared me in plenty of places which really surprised me.

    Secret Life of Pets 8/10

The advertisements were a little misleading but it was for the best because if it was advertised for what it was I probably wouldn't have gone to see it. But I really liked it I thought it was fun and obviously made me wanna go home and cuddle my cats right after even though it was surprisingly violent.

I liked it a lot. I'm a big fan of theirs across the board, but there's something about that side of their filmmaking that really does it for me in particular.

I think their farces get unfairly dismissed, Big Lebowski being the exception. I think Hail, Caesar is one of their most entertaining comedies, and probably one of the most ideologically interesting.

    Zodiac

really liked it! I'm usually very hit or miss with Fincher, and this was a hit. loved the historical attention to detail, amount of tension injected into procedural, great acting. i feel like - this came out nearly a decade ago so it's only worn on me since, but super sarcastic witty characters just are kind of cringy at this point, they always always always feel hammy and forced.

Zodiac is one of the most unfairly dismissed American films of the last decade. It has started to get the recognition it deserves, but it was a victim of the stupidity of the Oscar race, where movies that come out in the first half of the year are treated as if they are non-existent. 2007 was the best year for movies this century, and even with that it is still one of the best.

surprisingly, i also have a lot of love for Gone Girl. but both are way better than Seven or Fight Club imo. The Game is solid too, if a little too predictable.

I think Fight Club is a very good movie that I like less and less every year. But most of that is the fault of the author, not Fincher.

Personally, he's unlikely to touch The Social Network for me. I think that's legitimately one of the greatest of all time.

Zodiac and The Social Network are probably the most generally agreed upon. Seven and Fight Club would be up there as well, but not by me.

However, it probably could have done well outside of the cinephile community if it was not for timing. It has two of The Avengers!

The Game is great for what it is, but the premise had the potential to be so much more. I know remakes don't have the best track record, but I wouldn't mind seeing it done with this film.

I haven't seen it yet (major sin) but by reputation isn't it fairly slow-paced and open-ended? Always going to be harder to sell that to a mainstream audience if so

It wouldn't make 100 million dollars but it is a conventional enough movie for adults to enjoy. It is open ended because of the nature of the Zodiac Killer, but the film stops being about the murders themselves in the second half of the film.

As consolation, it's definitely the last time a Fincher movie will come out before the fall prob ever again. He's one of the elite now
