what do you think anime is? I didnt say having tropes and conventions is bad or even the ones that anime has are bad, I said i dont like the tropes and conventions in anime. Sometimes people dont like a genre because they are only farmilar with a few popular examples, ie they dont like metal because they have only heard metalica. Those people might get into it if you show them a another metal band with a different singer, but they might just not dig heavily distorted guitar, double kick and aggressive vocals and in that case youd be wasting your time.
A different art form. Anime has sports, cooking, action, romance, music, fantasy, etc genres. There’s a big difference between things like Haikyu, Bocchi, and Monster.
To say you gave something a chance and still don't like it on a somewhat fundamental level, I think is perfectly valid. But i don't think your example of metal is a perfect analogy. anime is just Japanese animation. Animation is a medium, not a genre. You can have a series like DC Superhero Girls and a series like Harley Quinn. Both animation, using a lot of the same characters even, yet very different genres. Same with anime.
to clarify, it's not just oh this show's for kids and this show's for adults. there are shows that are comedy and shows that are horror. just like any other medium, there are different genres.
Anyways, I don’t mean to be argumentative and derail the thread! Doctor Who season 14 - 8/10 I binged this with the wife on Disney+ after not seeing an episode since the Capaldi era. This could have been a 9, but the finale was a big head-scratcher. But I love Ncuti Gatwa as the new Doctor and he has great chemistry with his new companion. There are some lows, but the highs outweigh them. 73 Yards is an amazing episode of television and one of the best DW episodes. I can’t wait for the next season!
The distiction is semantic. Animation can be described as a genre of film and anime a subgenre of animation. The purpose of genre is to give us language to talk about art and using it is the most effectively way to clearly communicates my point. When I talk about anime as a genre of film/animation with styles, conventions and tropes it makes sense and everyone knows what im talking about. From an audience perspective it is not a different art form. When you watch film or television, anime or not youre doing exactly the same thing, you read it the same way and use all the same language to talk about it.
I've seen multiple people try to switch the word anime with animation and then argue with that strawman. No one is arguing against all animation.
I dont like the arguement that anime is too diverse to criticise as a whole. They act I cant dislike anime when I havent watched all sub genres and niches, that my dislike must stem from ignorance. Diving into subgenres and niches is something you do for genres you already like. Anime is distict enough that it has fans, there are people that are people that prefer to watch a lot of animie because of its distict features; the style, the tropes and conventions. They vibe with it and like the techinques that create that vibe, they dive into the subgenres and enjoy when the tropes get subverted & played with, like they the anime versions of other genres and defend it online. They dont like every anime or subgenre but they are fans in general. All of that is true in the postive for the fans and true in the negative for haters like me who aint vibing.
I’m with you. I’ve tried several times to see the appeal in it to no avail. finally came to the conclusion that it just wasn’t for me. if only anime fans would accept that instead of telling me I’m wrong about how I feel. I’ve always been a like what you like person and I don’t think it lacks artistic merit or anything, just ain’t for me
i wanna be careful with how i say this since i don't watch anime and don't have a whole lot of knowledge about its surrounding culture (and also just so i don't unintentionally piss anyone off), but i do think how we view anime in the medium vs. genre conversation has a strong sociocultural element to it - namely the way it's marketed here in the west as a cultural export. of course any medium, like anime, is going to be multifaceted and have differences between the composition of certain projects. but i don't know how much understanding of those differences western audiences generally have when coming across anime, because it all just kind of gets lumped together as its own genre over here? like others were alluding to, it's similar to how certain music genres with differing subgenres get consolidated differently depending on where you are in the world, although we're talking about something beyond just genre. is anime a medium or a genre? from my limited vantage point, it appears to be both, and the reason is parts economic, social, and cultural.
I understand that anime can be a medium, in the context of the movie review thread it's functionally a genre. It can be deconstructed and criticed same as any other. I know, I think you almost got my point but when I said I don't like anime as a genre 3 people told me animes not a genre and I went typing.
A good anime that is very different to "classic" anime that I watched recently ish was "On-Gaku: Our Sound", from 2019. A bunch of high schooler slackers form a rock band, and it's a joyous little watch, a celebration of music, idiots and teenagers. Only 70 minutes long, with a distinctive animation style that really suits the story.
Damn, I love Spy No, it's a medium, not a genre. Watch the movie Grave of The Fireflies and then go watch the movie Lupin III: The Castle Of Cagliostro. The former is about children trying to survive during World War II and the latter is a comedy crime caper with a wisecracking thief. It's not "functionally a genre". I don't care if people don't like anime, in fact I understand it and how off-putting it can be. I understand that people also can't connect with animated characters as opposed to live human beings and that to a lot of people all they see is brightly colored characters screaming at each other but to just blatantly ignore facts because it's "just semantics" is strange. You can absolutely criticize anime as a whole just like you can books, video games, etc. I think video games struggle with story because it often clashes with the interactivity of the medium. Anything can be criticized.
