The Wolf of Snow Hollow - 8/10 More Cummings. This one landed a little better for me, albeit feeling slight, on second watch, especially after rewatching Cummings' other two features. His writing feels as sharp as ever, and beyond how funny and well-directed this is, it also feels expertly casted. Your mileage may vary with the reveal, but I still think it's a super fun and unique independent vision that mostly works thematically. "Who throws a beer bottle at a cop car?" Happy Birthday to Me - 7.5/10 Absolutely overlong and in desperate need of an editor, but WOW does this early-80s slasher/American giallo take some major swings, especially in its reveal. It's convoluted, but incredibly engaging to watch a proto-Scream film unfold in 1981, with some very solid kills (and visual effects) to boot. The stuff that doesn't work kind of lands with a thud, but more of it works than you'd expect, largely due to an audacious script and the aesthetic choices of director J. Lee Thompson. It's hard to compare this to anything other than Prom Night (a more nightmarish April Fool's Day perhaps come closest), but like...a much more innovative version of that.
It's time the studios pick up Jim, I want to see him work with other actors and writers on his level.
I just don't want to see him stripped of his creativity, but I also think he might be stagnating a bit with the limits of independent film so you may be right.
I just reserved a seat for Kinds of Kindness and I couldn't help but notice the damn thing's like three hours long. without spoiling too much, what's a good sort of halfway point to run to the restroom?
people around here have been reviewing it pretty steadily if that’s what you mean. there’s also an inordinate amount of YouTube reviews if you meant something more like that
The movie review thread isn't the only place ppl post movie reviews. I posted mine in the horror thread.
Kinds of Kindness was weird asf. Typical for Yorgos, I'm sure. I found that I wasn't really rooting for anyone. Not that that's a requirement for a movie to be good. I just wasn't into this like I was with Poor Things. It seems like people who didn't like Poor Things really dug this and vice versa. Kind of an odd comparison to make but I'm reminded of Beau is Afraid and how a lot of people liked it, maybe even more than they did Midsommar, but it just didn't work for me the same way Midsommar did Also I think the biggest disappointment for me personally is that with such a long runtime Hunter was barely in this
Yeah I dont want to see him locked into franchises, give him a bag of money and a book of names. Sadly the idea a studio would bet on talent and support them is wishful thinking.
been a while since i watched the original. i'm sure the sequel more than justifies its existence as a unique take on the concept?
I have never seen Twister, but I think about our 5th grade graduation and they took us to Universal Studios and when the cow flew by the computer teacher yelled look Joey there's your mom and we all thought it was hilarious. That was a top-tier ride back in its time.
I am currently 50 minutes into Click (2006) because I couldn't find a better comedy on Hulu and I wanted something vaguely familiar. it's not good
