Drive My Car (2022) - One of my favourites, the Arthouse in town was screening it again. A rich and complex view of people, how they cope with trauma, what things they can and can not allow, how this follows shaping their view of others and the interactions they create together.
As a person living in a world you are not capable of understanding it fully but we can find good work to do and appreciate its mystery and beauty in the meantime.

Schindler’s List (1994) - I don't know what's wrong with me, my mind fused this movie with a buddy comedy that came out in 2007 but i always remember having that idea. Super good movie, way better. I get why everyone likes Liam now. I liked the list. Powerful stuff.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) - I watched this right before I went to bed and you might think that would be a mistake but I had the best dream ever. I invented a new way of flying with a pool noodle and I flew into my own birthday party and everyone cheered.

Gone In 60 Seconds (1974) - I didn't know there were 2 versions of this but I got the wrong one. Or did I??? Opening scene is killer. Cadillac tearing down the open road, 5 pairs of sunglasses on the dash grooving to a smooth psych rock ditty. The next 40 mins are all kinda all over the place. They didn't write a script and they didn't hire Nic Cage or any actors at all. This is a movie written by stunt drivers for stunt drivers and you'll just have to admire the outrageous sideburns and the myriad of classic cars till we get to the stunt driving. In a way it's a spiritual opposite to TCM where TCM is killing it in the build up, making very cool innovative creative choices with the actual chases letting it down briefly. Gi60s1974 bumbles through a basic plot with amatuer continuity problems then launches into a 40 min epic chase sequence. This was so fun, going to check the 2000 version next.

The Handmaiden - 10/10 Park going full Hitchcock and then some, I don't think I've ever been overwhelmed on every level in the way that this movie overwhelmed me. I watched the extended cut and for the first time I finally understand the "this is too much sex" discourse that happens, but I think it's in service of a greater point (that K feel I can't speak to as a dude in this instance).

Anyway can't believe I waited so long to see this.

    The Insider - 3.5/5

It’s funny we complain now about movies being made about stuff that happened only a few years ago but this came out in 1999 from something that happened in 1996. Enjoyed the mostly restrained performance from Pacino.

Turtles All The Way Down - 3 1/2 out of 5

As far as coming of age, romance films that deal with a severe case of OCD goes it was pretty good. I liked Isabela Merced's acting in it. The edits and voiceovers of her dealing with OCD were also neat. The story outside of that was pretty much any slice of life/coming of age John Green book, but you know what you're getting into before you watch it. The turtles all the way down ideology doesn't make sense to me, but the film was enjoyable nonetheless.

  18. The Village - 8/10
Pleased to report that upon revisiting this, it stands next to Lady in the Water as one of Shyamalan's most misunderstood films and one of his best, top five at least. As always, Shyamalan's dialogue suffers and the incredible ensemble cast here (including not only Bryce Dallas Howard and Adrien Brody, but Joaquin Phoenix, Sigourney Weaver, and Brendan Gleeson!) does their best with what their given, but if you can set some of that awkwardness aside? Shyamalan presents himself as a master of atmosphere here, a conjurer of iconic imagery (Eisenberg standing on the stump) with a strong eye for striking shots. The cinematography, score, and practical "creature" design here are all so, so good. Even the reveals feel less like calculated "twists" here and more like unexpected and deserved story progression, handled with almost surgical care. Reading reviews for this film at the time of release is fascinating because it's clear there was mis-marketing of fan expectations, the film itself, or both. Ironically -- Brody laying it on thick aside -- The Village has aged into one of the more beautiful and unique period-horror-thrillers ever made.

    Humane - 7/10
Caitlin Cronenberg's directorial debut about a Succession-style family forced to choose amongst themselves a body to be euthanized isn't without its flaws -- its social commentary and allegory about a certain administration are rather on the nose, resulting in quips that don't always land -- but it's also a hell of a good time, a near-future take on Ready or Not that oscillates between black comedy and vicious horror-thriller. There's certainly enough bloodshed to justify the Cronenberg name, and much of the casting her is solid of not downright inspired (specifically looking at Enrico Colantoni as the charming psychopath Bob). The film's messaging is a little muddy -- do bad circumstances for good people to do good things, or are we to root for a family filled with horrible people? -- but if you can manage to not think into it too much, the latest Cronenberg debut is tense, violent, and occasionally, quite funny. If she can improve her writing abilities or at least continue to recruit solid ensemble casts to deliver her material, Humane will go down as a promising first step into a family business filled with scars and genre-bending near-futurism.

This is me on Letterboxd, I quickly review everything I log. I watch a lot of Hong Kong films, so if you're interested in forgotten 80s comedies, or unpleasant horror films, I'm your man.

Hated this when I saw it in theaters. Enjoyed it more this time around but it’s still not great. Felt like Mann trying to do Heat again.

This is spot on. All anyone cared about at the time was "What is the twist??" But it's so well crafted they could have cut out the final 5 min and it'd still be a decently strong, moody horror film.

It's a shame that questioning mainstream narratives is now equated with conspiracy theories, and conspiracy theories are now equated with harmful right-wing rhetoric, especially when the narrative you are curious about has to do with an individual with right-wing ties. Being as respectful as possible to David Crowley's family, there are definitely some question marks around the veteran/filmmaker's jarring decent into madness and eventual murder, and for anyone with some level of parapolitical interest, there are a number of speculated motivations that simply don't make sense, strange details that seem almost tailor-made to point to a person's insanity (despite little evidence of mental health issues prior to their unraveling). Still, it's entirely possible that Crowley did buckle under the pressure of delivering his somewhat eyeroll-worthy, somewhat prescient police state film to his rabid nu-right supporters and execute his family. And aside from a truly bizarre ending sequence, this Herzog-produced documentary does a great job of telling that version of events, one that feels truly stranger than fiction and seems to elude a lot of true crime and conspiracy circles for whatever reason. Now I'd like to see a version that does (respectfully) address some of the peculiar question marks plaguing the accepted narrative and determine whether alternate theories are worth exploring.
