It isn't an insult. They are like Popeye's or Chick-fil-a and the superhero movies are like McDonald's.

Haven’t seen avatar 2 but the first is one of those films where it having a lackluster script and hardly any performances that make up for a lack of depth doesn’t really matter because it looks so cool

I'd be honored if my life's work was compared to Popeye's.

If I am sitting down to eat it: 4 piece all white meat mild, fries, extra biscuit.

If I am driving or I am going to the Popeye's near my house that always gets the order wrong: 5 piece tenders mild, fries, extra biscuit.

  17. Yeah, definitely see the second one ASAP lol it looks even cooler and has a much better script and performances imo. I adore that film.

  18. Hannibal Rising - 6/10
I definitely like this a little more than I should -- the dialogue is rough at times, and the lead is awful -- but not unlike Red Dragon, it's functional, and occasionally even a little fun if you don't mind them unraveling the mystery of Hannibal Lector in order to make a by-the-numbers historical slasher of sorts. At the very least, the movie looks pretty good, and there are some very solid performances throughout. Honestly, if you're expecting anything else out of this film series at this point, that's kind of on you.

  19. Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) - 7/10
As Not a Superhero Guy, I thought this was a lot more creative, cohesive, and fun that most comic book movies in recent memory. You still have to deal with the random, rawr XD humor of the film's antihero (see: the film's title), but aside from that and a horrendously dramatic Pat Benatar cover, Birds of Prey feels like a breath of fresh air with plenty of violent action and flair. Any gripes I might have about CG or annoying character traits are swallowed up by a shockingly straightforward and engaging story with a hell of third-act set piece. In many ways, most of them good, this feels like the DCEU's answer to Deadpool.

    Cat People (1942) - 8.5/10
I've been wanting to see this one for years. I expected it to be good, but I didn't expect it to be so emotional. As many of pointed out, there is queer-coding here as well as a story about the way we gaslight women. But as a man, I also took away this tragic sense that sometimes, there are no protagonists or antagonists. Sometimes, good people get themselves in a bad situation and hurt each other, intentionally or otherwise. It's shockingly simply and compelling, accompanied not only by solid performances but some incredible visual moments (the pool scene is stunning) and one notable early jump scare. Upon reading about the film, it seems I may have missed some things, and I struggled a bit with the way the film jumps ahead in time without much of a signifier, but in all honesty, that just makes me more excited to revisit this film that I already can't stop thinking about. Beautiful, emotionally resonant and impactful stuff.

The Schrader or the Val Lewton?

  22. Van Lewton. Had no interest in the sequel until this morning when I read it was directed by Schrader, lol

That whole Lewton run is super interesting, but I will say I wish I Walked with a Zombie and especially The Leopard Man got hyped on the same level as Cat People. I actually think they're both better.

Nice! You really can't go wrong with any of the Lewton horrors (caveat that I still need to see Ghost Ship)
