I mean it's just a move about people trying to break into a house. You aren't in the middle of the purge like they actually did in the second one.

A Bigger Splash was really interesting, gonna think about it more as the overall work sits with me, but there were some really, really interesting choices in cinematography that were almost jarring but managed to work. I particularly admired how the direction was able to create an idyllic atmosphere for most of the film, but gradually introduced new elements that underscored everything and shot the tension up and up and up until the closing 25-30 minutes.

Fabulous, fabulous performances from Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes.

    Anomalisa (2015)

Kaufman made a hyper real puppet simulator to very accurately recreate 2 lamers having sex and its pretty moving. An average solipsistical man's having a midlife crisis of sorts, crisis seems dramatic but im pretty sure MLCs are when u release how repetitive and trapped u are in a life-cycle so u do something dumb do break up the monotony. This time the man has a short affair when he discovers and a women and situation which he thinks is very special and different probably because hes never experienced it before, but really you can just take mdma, speed, coke whatever and pretty reliably have that kind of connection with strangers again and again till it's its own problem but at least the sex will be better but sometimes can cause dick probs so roll ur dice. Also deals very well with the post infatuation hangover when u realize the people u want to fuck arent perfect and wont fix all ur probs. Just appreciate that one special night as that, one fun exciting night.

Kaufman again puts massive about of detail into his second film as a director but unlike Synecdoche ny the plot is extremely straight forward and very easily digested on first viewing setting the sole focus on the inert human connection of the puppets.
Theres a thing, a big part of why the connection working its magic is that the 2 characters are very average, i called them lamers in my opener but thats harsh and they are just very normal and i was harsh because normally in movies the characters are very good to extremely good looking and charming and Pop and have events happen to them at a pace, i reviewed wanda recently and that was a dull slow movie cause even tho events and extreme good looks were present the charm, pop & pace were not
so event tho u feel for her as in this u dont feeeel not dull while watching Anomalisa scarifces all excitement of moives for the extreme accuracy to ur presumably normal not movie esq life where which is in it own way refreshing

post edit: i didn't comment on the dream sequence cause i probably need to re-watch and pay more attention but im going to watch neighbors 2 instead becasue i also watched room and i need some less heavy shit in my lyf

Cinetopia in Detroit this weekend, looking forward to seeing some indies that just aren't going wide. Heard interesting things about the Alchemist's Cookbook, which showed at SXSW, looking forward to catching that tonight. Just generally happy that the city is excited about unique and interesting movies. A little drunk, too.

    The Man from U.N.C.L.E. - 7/10

Somewhat enjoyed this to be honest, no it doesn't have the best plot and has its cliches but it was entertaining on the whole, the action was solid and I wasn't bored at all.

i havent been watching enough movies lately!

    The Witch - 8/10

It felt a lot like a play. In fact, I'd love to see this on stage someday. I'm not saying that as a knock, but considering how we managed to stay confined within the farm the whole time, it had a very 'theater' feel. Anyways. Definitely pretty chilling, and this director dude is spot on with the atmosphere in this film. i think the film was missing something to send it over the edge...I always get frustrated by 'witch trial' conversations (stop possessing them..i'm not...stop lying grrrrrr), so that definitely hurt the movie a bit for me. Honestly, I think the movie had the opportunity to throw in some MORE haunting images to really make this an all-time scary movie. You had the dark atmosphere, I wish the director used it. Good watch. Good job. Good ending.

    Approaching the Unknown - 3/10

Fuck this movie. No no, okay, that's harsh, it's my fault. I don't know why I thought this was going to be good? I saw a trailer and I guess I like 'going to mars' movies and really any sort of space travel movie, and I've gotten into actor Mark Strong lately, but I mean...this had "DIRECT TO VHS" written all over it and I don't know how i overlooked that aspect. This movie blew. Arduous, boring, without anything new to add to the 'space madness' trope. I was on board for the first half, thinking they were going to take it in a new direction, but then you realize there's 10 minutes left, and it is what it is. You watch the trailer, you get it. Bleh.

had a long flight so I watched a bunch of movies

Clueless and Mistress America complement each other well, Brooke and Cher have a lot in common

Sleeping With Other People was pleasant enough and the cast was great

the first time I watched Rushmore because I hated Max so much, on rewatch I was able to appreciate it in spite of that and love a lot about it like Bill Murray's performance and the soundtrack

    Fantastic Four

Yep, it's bad. Not even bad in an interesting way. Just boringly written and boringly acted, with terrible special effects and a rushed ending (although that may have been an act of mercy, all things considered).

You get the strong feeling that absolutely nobody enjoyed the process of making it or ultimately cared if it was any good.

    The Nice Guys - 9/10

Shane Black does it once again, this was absolutely brilliant and is easily one of my favorite films not based on anything prior in a while. Gosling and Crowe are great together and them two on screen is when this film works the best, the action is old school is the best kind of way, the soundtrack is brilliant (Earth, Wind & Fire, Kool & The Gang, America, Bee Gees and Kiss to name a few that are featured), production wise it is spot on and crucially it was really really funny. Did what Lethal Weapon pulled off and balanced the serious moments really well with the comedy.

Rififi was cool. Love a good heist movie. The ending is a bit of a bummer.

    The Lobster

The whole time I was watching it I had this uncomfortable feeling and thought, "wow, this is fucked and reminds me a lot of Dogtooth." Turns out it's the same director so that's cool! I enjoyed. Wish I wasn't so sleepy while watching it though.

Watching the Sandlot with my classes. Never gets old. The pool sequence with Squints and his slow descent into madness is hilarious however many times I watch it

The Sandlot is an all-time favorite of mine. I happened to be in Skokie a couple weeks ago and randomly stumbled upon a burger place called the Sandlot, with still frames from the film and posters and everything, I was giddy. Great food as well.

I saw the Lobster and the Anthony Weiner documentary recently and enjoyed both. I also saw Warcraft and X-Men: Apocalypse and they almost made me want to give up on movies.

yeah, i'm not interested much in World of Warcraft itself so i'm not interested in a movie about it. I love Duncan Jones though, so i will automatically see his next og picture

I saw Frances Ha on Netflix a lil while ago and it was really pleasant! it had a kind of "day in the life"/"stream of consciousness" type structure, that made the pace feel a little meandering at places but it was a really good coming of age style movie, albeit about someone in their mid/late twenties, haha

I did not like Altman's MASH at all. Found it aimless, unfunny and didn't like any of the characters. Could be reading it wrong, but I also got strongly misogynistic/homophobic/racist vibes from the main gang as well. Altman's filmography is such a mixed bag. I think McCabe & Mrs. Miller and 3 Women are two of the best films I've ever seen, while this and Nashville are two of my least favorite "cannon" films I've seen.
