I like candy and I like (some horror). I don't like this stupid, drunken nightmare, comically lame excuse for a holiday. It's when all the idiots come out to play. All holidays are bad though.
eXistenZ - 8/10 Maybe the horniest Cronenberg movie, which is a feat considering Crash exists. It's also a lot funnier and more self-aware than I remember. 100% a spiritual successor to Videodrome and a precursor to Crimes of the Future, made me excited to rewatch that one. Just a banger of a sci-fi body horror thriller about free will. The third act is over-the-top, but Cronenberg is a madman and pulls it off. Jennifer Jason Leigh is the best.
You can have candy any time of the year. Easter is Cadbury Eggs though so that is the best candy holiday.
Thriller: A Cruel Picture - 8.5/10 A cruel picture is right... but man, what a picture. I love a good exploitation film, and this one particularly interested me due to its influence on Tarantino and Kill Bill. It's really fascinating to see the sex and violence flipped in a European feature; there's full-on penetration, but the camera shows restraint during the final kill. The slow motion stuff is awesome. Your mileage may vary with the pornography sequences in the uncut festival version (my copy came with both that and a theatrical cut), but for a 70s R&R film, I'm just kind of surprised at how some of the content is handled as well as some of the angles taken by the filmmakers. I don't know that it's a particularly smart film -- hell, the producers apparently used live ammunition during some of the stunts -- but it's an effective one, and I'm thankful for the influence it's had.
