  10. Spider-Man facing off against Green Goblin on the rooftop in the first one is such a real confrontation divorced from the CG battles we get in every Marvel movie now. The stakes feel so real

That's generous for Friday the 13th 3, which I also watched this weekend. What'd you like about it?

  13. I should preface this by saying I'm a big fan of the franchise, and it's probably closer to a 7 for me, but I think it could be the quintessential slasher despite not being one of the best, even when it comes to Friday movies. Jason gets his mask, spends the second half of the movie killing a bunch of characters we couldn't care less about (including two stoner stereotypes), and on top of that, we get a ton of silly, charming 3D gimmicks. It takes a while to get going, but once it does, I think the kills are good!

  14. Bringing Out the Dead - 7/10

Watched because of this thread and my recent After Hours rewatch. One of those movies that is so strange, I'm almost certain it will grow on me in the future despite not totally clicking with me on first watch. Just so tonally bizarre, but there is some awesome stuff here (the dream sequence in particular). Some strange choices from Scorcese here (definitely feels like Schrader's film), but it left me thinking and feeling a lot. Cage is good, but I also kept picturing the film with Reeves in the leading role for some reason.

Sometimes all you need to do is give great actors an even better script, then get the hell out of their way. No flashbacks, no flashy camerawork, just competing accounts of what happened aboard a naval ship during a typhoon, almost entirely set in a single room.

Stefon voice — This movie has everything; Jack Bauer, the shitty boyfriend from White Lotus, angry Lakers coach, Fringe guy, and Mark Duplass' brother.

The Royal Hotel is an interesting film about the constant struggle for young women to balance between being fun and carefree and the reality of the dangers they are constantly in.

Stop Making Sense - 10/10 Only knew two Talking Heads songs going in, now I gotta dig into their discography. The performance of This is The Place (Naive Melody) got me teary eyed.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour - 8/10 some nitpicks here and there of the setlist but I'm a casual Swift fan, cannot stress enough how sick that Atmos mix on this is and was thankful to see it in a Dolby theater since I'm out of town.

Poltergeist - 10/10 Rewatch of a certified masterpiece at the Drafthouse. Movie just gets better every time I see it and Tobe Hooper deserves so much more love than he gets, he's got two films in my top 5 horror movies (..and TCM 2 would definitely make my top 20).

had never seen either Sinsters. love the lost boys (and 80’s movies in general)

  19. Altered States - 9.5/10
Unbelievable film, like a cross between 2001: A Space Odyssey and a precursor to The Fly. A surreal creature-feature of sorts with excellent performances and visual effects. $5 to purchase on Vudu right now.

This was a fun little action comedy. Definitely influenced by Edgar Wright's Cornetto films, but needed to turn a few of the dials up to elevate it to that level (maybe a little more violent, a little bit weirder, or a bit more visually inventive). That said, for a first full-length film, it's a pretty confident effort.

The Italian Job (1969) - It's definitely not perfect. Most of the characters are paper thin and there are a few plot lines that don't seem to go anywhere, but damn it's pretty fun. The heist itself was perfectly executed, really gripping as soon as they jam up the traffic. And the cliffhanger ending is the cherry on top.

Beautiful, cozy, devastating. Please seek this one out.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre - 9.5/10
This watch hit harder than ever before. Nightmarish stuff with some beautiful shots. Absolutely terrifying third act.
