Beau is Afraid - 9.5/10 The ultimate guilt trip shown through the lens of an absurdist horror comedy. So funny, so fucked up. Genuinely joyous filmmaking from Aster here. Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth - 6.5/10 Extremely fun and watchable trash Hellraiser: Bloodline - 5/10 Slightly less fun and watchable trash. Points for 19th century Adam Scott!
Polite Society was unreasonably fun. Takes a strange turn about an hour in but kept me reeled in with its charm
The Menu - 8/10 Very original. Great cast. Again, original in what it is. It's not a gross out movie like i expected and just the right blend of comedy. I think it was missing something to take it over the edge. This movie is nauseating because doing food puns in the review are too fucking easy but.... there's not enough meat on the bones to make this something super special. But overall, very solid and no real complaints.
How to Blow Up a Pipeline (I feel like I'll be on a list now for even typing the title of this movie in here) - Picture the tension and chaos of Uncut Gems mixed with an Ocean's 11. It's not as good as either of those, but it was still effective. It's a good showcase for why people feel the need to find ways to fight outside of the system. When you keep being told that the system works, but nothing ever changes, you feel the need to go to extremes. I do wish some of the characters were a little more fleshed out. Polite Society - A ton of fun. It lost me a little with that twist, but if you're looking to laugh and see some creative ass kicking, look for this near you. Con Air - It took me too long to watch this movie. What a blast. The ending is a little rushed and bumpy, but the ride up to that point is pure joy (please excuse the flight puns). God bless Nic Cage.
It’s not a movie that’s grounded in reality, so it’s not that it didn’t fit. It still took me out of it though. I got over it quickly though because I was having a good time.
You betcha lol. I knew of the premise from pop-culture references, but didn't know it was an actual movie, let alone an Oliver Stone film with Michael Caine. Kind of goofy, sure, but also super tense and genuinely unsettling at times. I loved it.
That's exciting. I'd like to see all of his eventually and was kinda dreading the two pre-Salvador features. So that's good news.
I'm a big genre fan, so take it with a grain of salt, but it's a very fun psychological horror film imo.
