Argentina, 1985 - I always have a soft spot for courtroom dramas and procedurals and this was pretty solid. The chemistry between Darín and Lanzani really makes it hum. The whole cast is great. I also loved the score for the most part. One of my favorites of 2022. I didn't know much about the subject matter, but I plan on reading more about it now. I do wish it had sharper teeth though. The trial never really feels like an uphill battle. And while it touches on how upper and middle-class comforts can turn into complicity, it feels more like a box to be checked than something to be examined.
It was my grandparents' favorite movie. I think I borrowed that VHS at least a dozen times. So many of the jokes and "scares" are ingrained in my head
Marley & Me - I watched this again for the first time as a dog owner and I was a complete wreck at the end. And with a three-year-old lab, every bit about Marley just felt too relatable. I'll admit it still is beholden to too much of the schmaltzy dog movie tropes, but there are some very human moments in it that set it above what's typical for the genre, like when the two guys meet again near the end and realize there friendship fizzled out with distance.
Final Destination - 6.5/10 So insanely goofy and fun and original, but the series mostly gets better from here. BlacKkKlansman - 7.5/10 Mixed messages with this one, but Lee mostly knows what he's doing here and directs the hell out of it. Great casting and performances.
I believe so. The fourth one (The Final Destination) is consensus worst, but I think most people's favorites are 5, 3, and 2, roughly in that order.
A Thousand and One - My expectations were pretty high for this. It didn't quite live up to them but it's still pretty damn good. A very interesting dissection of gentrification and family. The Mummy (1999) - It's been years since I watched this. There are definitely aspects that did not age well (which is to be expected of any 20-year-old movie), but it's still a ton of fun
John Wick - 9.5/10 John Wick: Chapter 2 - 9/10 Faults - 9/10 (highly recommend this one on Prime) Southland Tales - 6.5/10
It was fun, but maybe it's because I didn't see it when I was younger, but it was just fine and I think it was overhyped for me. I really did like Helen Hunt's character and I thought the way they handled the antagonist was pretty neat. They didn't make him this comic book villain who has monologues or is overly evil. He's just an arrogant prick and gets his comeuppance. I don't think I'd watch it again.
I rewatched Twister a few years ago and still really enjoy it. I think it's one of those movies where the cast really elevates the script. Hoffman, Paxton, Hunt, and Elwes are all perfectly cast. Paxton and Hunt have great chemistry too.
