I just don’t like a lot of The 1975’s vocal effects. They're either too auto-toned or edited to sound deep. Many songs sound too produced with layers of distortion. LANY, to me, sounds more simple and easy-going. I can listen to the entire Malibu Nights album and it will mostly sound like one guy who just sat in his room.
I can see that! I disagree since I think their first 2 albums are the cleanest sounding records, but the last 2 are slightly more muddled. really wish they had Crossey back to produce for the next cycle to free up their creative space
These LANY songs are extremely "produced" however. I'm confident in saying there's multiple effects and layers on every vocal line. But, I'd argue they're just not as good of songwriters and that's the main difference.
"no filler" includes "good guys" But it seems just as aimed at their first album, which has a voicemail on it. And filler.
Nightly is good (The Movies was one of my most played songs this past summer) but once again LANY has the dreamy-smooth ballads that I can’t find anywhere else. The new Joan EP is the closest to touching it.
Of course. One look at the credits for the songs and it’s apparent that they are very “produced.” It just doesn’t sound as produced to me. ‘13’, ‘Hericane’ ,‘Malibu nights’, ‘let me know’, and ‘valentine’s day’ are some examples of the simple smoothness that I value in LANY. I haven’t been able to find the same number of easy-listening in other artists of the genre. Some have two or three, but LANY is where I find the most.
It's way, way, way better than this album is. And I like this one alright, but there's some embarrassing misses.
I’m assuming songs like “good guys” and “if this is the last time” are among the embarrassing misses. Are there any tracks that focus more on piano than guitar like most of their singles have shown?
"Good Guys" is really bad, but I think "Anything 4 U" is cheese-central. I'd have to listen again for piano specifically.
They still have a shot at a solid B score if the rest of the tracks are better, but already can tell this won’t approach Malibu Nights
When you get broken up with by Dua Lipa, the outcome was the perfection that is Malibu Nights. Love the early projects, indifferent on the singles for this, but looking forward to hearing it in full. Hoping that preorder was worth it
