Gimme light, gimme love, gimme fire

I just rewatched Whiplash. Theory: Ryan Gosling is a young JK Simmons. Ryan's descent into living a fake dream and losing the girl of his dreams makes him into an asshole, abusive curmudgeon.

    Gonna spread the word

If you like this, you should check out the Umbrellas of Cherbourg and the Young Girls of Rochefort. Chazelle is pulling hard from Jacques Demy (toeing a line between influence/homage and simply being derivative).

Two of the best films ever made. If this can get people to discover Demy, I'll be fine with its existence.

Went to see this with my gf today because she really wants to and the next 3 show times were sold out.

Since I have to wait until January to see this I'll try and check these out before. Thanks for the recommendations.

Also, if anyone likes the throwback Old Hollywood vibe and singing/dancing, Hail, Caesar! had the best musical routine of the year. Far more inventive and intricate choreography, for all the ways this movie is a delight and really good, the dancing is never really much.

I know this is by no means a commonly held opinion and not to derail the thread but I think Hail, Caesar! might be the most underrated American film of the year.

Hail, Caesar! was really good. I'm bummed that it went pretty under the radar in 2016.

I re-watched it yesterday and there's so much going on, it's saying so much and is so nuanced, and then it's also hilarious and incredibly staged. I've seen it called lesser Coens, which even if that were the case that could still mean it's brilliant, but I might put it in the top half of their filmography.

The scene with Alden Ehrenreich and Ralph Fiennes at the film shoot makes it great on its own, let alone all the other great things about it.

I found everything about this genuine. I thought the fight at the table was extremely realistic. The resentments we build up in our personal relationships often don't have much grounding in the truth. They're more about our delusions and trying to deflect blame, which is exactly what Seb is doing. He feels guilty about selling out and so he's defensive and cutting.

And I don't think Seb's creative process was any more detailed than Mia's struggles with the auditioning process leading to her taking the creative reins. I think they both were paced about the same. In fact, both of his real moments of creation are in tandem with Mia. The first time we hear one of his compositions, it's entirely filtered through Mia's perspective and story. And we only get a tease of "City of Stars" until the duet version where Mia is arguably carrying more of the song than he is.

We hear more of the songs than we see of the play because this is a musical, plain and simple.

Saw this last night and loved every second. Loved the 'golden age' vibe, as well as the soundtrack, colour and feel of the whole thing.

    A+.

This was amazing. I absolutely loved it and don't get a lot of the criticisms here, but to each their own I guess. Easily the best film I've seen all year.

I took this post to be as good as any a reason to finally watch Lola tonight, so thank you!

Nice! It's a really incredible movie. Only way it could be better is if it was also a musical. Haha

I was very underwhelmed by this movie, and it saddens me. I've been following it since it was announced, and have a passion for musicals. Thought this would be the perfect film for me... I'll give it another try when I can rent it.

I mean yeah but the theater near me is never sold out and this time was a last minute decision cause we ate dinner near the theater. It's not really a big deal. Just thought it was interesting to share ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

No, I just feel bad. I know the feeling. It sucks. It's why I started buying all my movie tickets at least a day in advance.
