Honestly, people brought up fair criticisms but at first thought I wouldn’t have thought anything of this… but at this point, just tear down the video to avoid the PR nightmare. People will still be mad but it will minimize the damage. A lot of people in these comments need to to touch some grass though. Especially anyone telling Anthony to off himself.
I think it definitely can warrant a fair discussion, but some of those responses are just way too much.
I don't personally really want to get into an actual discussion about AI art, but I watched the Old Wounds video and made the mistake of looking at the comment section and christ. There are very valid criticisms against AI art, and a few comments were respectfully disagreeing, which I'm cool with. But I'm genuinely a little disturbed by just how parasocial and, for lack of better words, entitled people act towards bands/artists/influencers/whatever-other-kinds-of-famous people they follow online. It's very weird to see someone scolding the band like an upset parent, or acting like this one thing they disagree with means the band should lose all support. It's especially weird when fans act like they have some authority over whoever/whatever they're a fan of. And I don't know if this person was being serious, but one comment literally said they were shaking and crying because the video came out and I just genuinely cannot fathom letting a band you like have so much control over you that just them releasing a video you don't like causes that intense of a response. That's the rant. I'm becoming an old man shouting at the clouds but the intensity people reach online is a bit much.
internet in a nut shell unfortunately. people are emboldened to be the absolute worst version of themselves without consequence
They didn't need to commission a music video to get people "thinking, and talking, and feeling," about AI art. This conversation has already been had over and over by visual artists. AI art is theft. It would be nice to see some reflection on the impact of their actions in supporting "generative artists," rather than doubling down on their intent. Fans' extreme responses are obviously bad. I don't think anyone is arguing that.
it’s legitimately insane the way people react to artists not being perfect vessels for their own ideologies
Sorry. I meant that no one on this forum was defending that response. It’s frustrating to see valid criticism dismissed because of the louder, grosser responses.
I don’t think anyone has dismissed valid criticism but what are you even expecting to happen here? The band went forward with releasing the video, and why wouldn’t they? The problems with AI art don’t start and end with LS Dunes and taking anger out on them is so wildly misguided and just barking up the wrong tree but I can guarantee they’ll never do anything like this again because of the responses. I don’t think bands should use AI art but I also thinks bands who use AI aren’t shouldn’t be yelled at relentlessly the way they have been
AI art is bad and the band’s response to criticism is bad, but the fanbase (mostly the MCRmy) is very toxic and are the real problem here lol
And I didn’t say they should be yelled at. I said what I would hope to see happen from the band. I’m not expecting anything. It’s disappointing to see artists that I respect legitimize a form that actively devalues real artists.
Hopefully their past and future promotion and commissioning of "real" artists can make up for what seems like a fairly honest misstep in promoting and commissioning a "fake" artist.
Oh wow, they are releasing an entire demos album out next month! “Permanent Rebellion (Demo)” is from the L.S. Dunes album, 'Lost Songs: Lines and Shapes', available everywhere November 10, 2023. Pre-order 'Lost Songs: Lines and Shapes': https://found.ee/LSD_LostSongs
Also it's part of a deluxe vinyl release, all you vinyl-heads, you're welcome: https://store.fantasyrecordings.com/products/past-lives-deluxe-vinyl-2lp
Am I the only one that thinks it odd they released a video for Old Wounds (Demo) to sell the upcoming deluxe edition of Past Lives but it isn't listed on any of the track lists anywhere? Their web-site, other places listing it.. band camp, etc. https://lsdunes.store/product/25629/past-lives-deluxe-2xlp-cream-swirl
also, that Old Wounds demo is the most compelling of the whole bunch, I think; pretty sure I'm not going to go back to the full release anymore after checking it out yesterday at night. But it's still cool, you listen to demos like these ones and you can hear how important is the production process and what kind of turns songs take to become something so much better
