Funko Pops revealed. Thought Jinu was Bobby at first, dunno why they made him with the glasses when he barely wears them. Derpy is really the only one worth it to get, at least they knew to keep the eyes the same instead of just the black dots. Having the flower pot with him is really cute too.

I keep thinking about the “Takedown” sequence.

Don’t wanna do that silly thing where people pretend a well crafted kids movie is high art, lol, but like. The emotionality of that sequence hits so hard for me. The lyrics being turned around on Rumi is so simple but effective. And, the forced removal of her jacket in light of her relationship to her body… surprisingly distressing? Oof. I was dialed the fuck in to Rumi’s emotional journey from that sequence through to the end.

Also. As sad as that troubled demon form was, with that eye and everything, she also looked so cool, lol.

 

Yeah her demon form looks cool as hell. If I were to do a Halloween costume that’d be it for sure.

 

Are we supposed to assume that Rumi’s mom was sexually assaulted by a demon? When it was first mentioned that her dad was a demon, I had assumed it was a set-up to eventually show that demons aren’t categorically bad because Rumi’s mom fell in love with a good-ish one. So I was surprised that the circumstances of her birth were never brought up again.

I feel like the last act would’ve benefited from fleshing that out a bit more before the climax. Especially because, as the movie exists now, Jinu is literally the only demon we actually see that (1) we know to have had a human past, and (2) has any sort of conscience. Even the other Saja Boys aren’t given a shot at redemption!

 

I think the father angle is intentionally vague. Rumi probably assumes the worst, but also given her attitude towards demons, she probably doesn’t care about the specifics: to her, it’s shameful regardless. Even if it was consensual love, to the Rumi who hasn’t gone on her arc, it’s a mistake. If they’d been willing to end on a sequel bait note, wanting to know more about her dad surely would’ve been the hook.

And, the lack of good demons doesn’t bother me in this story because it’s relatively contained. All HUNTR/X fights are the big bad and his recruits serving his mission. We get the beginnings of seeing the world differently in the end by realizing that at least two demons (including Rumi) were good, and at least one human they looked up to was bad & needed rejected (which could be built on for a sequel’s threat, now that this was such a hit). Now that their worldview has changed, they can go forward with a broader, more nuanced understanding.

I guess a potential future story could be if the girls meeting a friend or family member of a demon who was just living their life before being slayed. But, that might be a bit too dark for what they’d want this to be, lol. I’d be fine hand-waving, for narrative purposes, that any innocent demon managed to avoid the girls.

 

Before it was confirmed, I pitched a sequel to my friend where Rumi has to save her father's soul. I think the father back story will definitely factor in somehow.

The bird in this is so good!

 

I thought this was okay overall - the last 20 minutes or so felt pretty rushed to me, but I still really enjoyed it. Very cute and the music rocked.

As someone who listens to… well, bands we usually talk about on this site, Golden absolutely wormed its way into my existence, and now I’m very fascinated in this movie. Started it last night, will try to finish it over the weekend, but just the songs I’ve already heard in the first quarter of this rules.
