That dude wrote an interesting article about the decline of modern metal in the mainstream, and while I think it was mostly correct, it seems disingenuous to look at metal and not include the more hardcore influenced acts. Knocked Loose, Turnstile, and to a much lesser degree, One Step Closer are playing the most interesting heavy music with potential crossover appeal these days.
I just discovered One Step Closer and boy it is CATTTCHHYY but I think their numbers still seem to be pretty low and maybe they're big on places like this where people really gather to talk about music but I definitely aren't seeing what you're seeing but maybe this album is the start of something? Leap year is an absolute bop though. They're on my radar now to catch live.
I see a lot of talk about Loathe, but if Speed is on your date you should def catch them. Another band that’s been on a fast rise, but they are great.
I can’t pinpoint it exactly but it makes so much sense to my ears how accessible this is and why they’re blowing up the way they are. It shouldn’t make sense but absolutely does. They’re undeniable.
Personally, I think there’s a distinct crossover with hip hop and dance grooves with some of the breakdowns. Production pushes that rhythm/low end hard and it works. Everything’s in lock-step
Definitely something to this. I went down the rabbit hole of knocked loose reaction videos last night and watched a guy who’s main listening was hip hop and had never heard of them before, and was vibing hard with the beats.
As someone who's interest in heavy extends about as far as Underoath and Every Time I Die, there's absolutely something to the beats/instrumentals on this record. I enjoy the music itself enough to really try to acclimate myself to the vocals, when usually I think I'd be pretty quick to dismiss the band outright because of his style.
Not exactly related, but I really appreciate when drummers aren't lockstep with the guitars during breakdowns, like at the end of The Calm That keeps You Awake. Abe Cunningham is great at resisting that in Deftones songs, and I see some of that in this record.
Snagged the hat and the vinyl. Good lord show me the body is a bizarre band but they went the fuck off. I’m front row on the balcony so I got a perfect view of the pit
When you’re over 30 it’s best to leave the moshing to the kids. Tons of gen z here, young kids wearing loathe shirts everywhere
Bummer, but I figured as much. They are playing to a click now so I'm guessing switching the setlist up like that isn't super easy.
I told my buddy last night how insanely tight they are live for a band with so many starts and stops and sudden tempo shifts and beat changes that they have to have leveled up their in ears and clicks
