Do I need to have seen the musical Stop The Planet Of The Apes. I Want To Get Off! starring Troy McClure before seeing this?
I love you Dr. Zaius. And I loved this. Felt like a good and different addition to the world built before it. I did miss the grittiness and darkness of Dawn and War, and there were moments that felt too long, and it could've done with maybe another big action sequence but really liked how it told the story of how a developing society will become power hungry no matter what, even against its own kind. Spoiler tagging the below, just incase. Proximus wasn't menacing enough, and didn't strike the fear I wish was present in the movie, but Noa was a good character and I'd love to see where he goes in a leadership role, similar to Caesar's arc. Loved some of the callbacks to the trilogy, and LOVED the sound of the horn/music during the human chase scene. Pure OG throwback. Glad the last half hour in the vault had that human connection that's needed in these films for the audience to identify. I didn't mind the ending as well, it'd be cool to see an all out big scale war between the last of the smart humans and the apes. Overall, I'd say a 7/10. Pretty good.
Liked but didn’t love the majority of this, middle was sloooooow but the final set piece was great. Could have done with less sequel building stuff at the end I think
I liked this a good bit. I’m very pleased that Wes Ball was able to make this as good as it is because I was filled with a lot of doubt when he was first announced. I don’t hate the Maze Runner movies or anything, but they’re not anything I’d be looking to return to and I absolutely love the previous Apes trilogy. So in that respect I’m relieved. I do wish more time had been given to the third act conflict because it does take a long time to get to Proximus. Spending so little screen time with him makes his character feel a little more slight than I thought he’d be based off of the promotional material. Loved all the little nods to the original series, especially the lore they’ve added to here with all human women being called “Nova” ever since Caesar’s time because of the little girl he took under his care in War.
I do hope that, if they end up remaking the original Planet of the Apes once this new trilogy finishes and reaches the timeline of the original film, they don’t also follow through with the plotline of Beneath. Other than it being the weirdest entry in the franchise, I never loved the whole time loop aspect of it. That was the one thought I had at the end with the reveal of the bunkers full of humans.
I'm very curious about how Link will be characterized. Unlike Mario, I don't think we've ever had much sense of Link as a person in any of the Zelda games.
I haven't seem this yet, but I just want to say I do love how many people these past few weeks have gone back and watched the sequel trilogy for the first time, and all the renewed appreciation for those movies. For years the common line was "hey these movies are lowkey really good, why do people not treat them as a bigger deal?" Culture seems to be past that now.
I love that trilogy so much. If this is anywhere close to that level I'll be thrilled. I'm going tonight!
20th has two new Kingsman movies (a sequel and a prequel) lined up in the slate, I bet they're also hoping for a similar revival/renewal in appreciation for that franchise when they roll out too.
Other franchises 20th has in the development pipeline to bring back under Disney for the first time: Master & Commander, Escape From New York, League Of Extraordinary Gentleman, Dodgeball, Big Trouble In Little China, Flash Gordon, The Maze Runner, Chronicle, Max Payne, Revenge Of The Nerds, Alita Battle Angel. Also remakes of Working Girl and 9 To 5. Disney has no set plans for Die Hard yet it seems.
Yeah it's going to be a prequel based on the first novel in the series. It's being written by YA novelist Patrick Ness. Last I heard it was supposed to be a direct to Hulu film like Prey, but I'm not sure if that has changed.
