I really wish they would make an album in a different studio with an outside producer. I know it sounds insane to say, considering all the different styles they do, but all their stuff sounds the same to me at this point. All of their albums have like 2-5 really good songs and a bunch of stuff that just evaporates into the air for me. Would love for them to spend some time and really work on 10 great, well fleshed out songs
finally caught up. really loving deadstick and aerodynamic off the new one will rank after the kiddo goes to bed lol
SLANDER! LOL Kidding - it's actually a valid point. Don't know if I'd say "sounds the same" but I get what you're implying.
I do think their sound seems to kind of collapse into a similar one for everything when they play live, at least based on the recordings.
In that article, I really liked where Stu talks about their approach to their live shows these days and how they feel more like musicians creating on the fly rather than simply being performers. Adrianne Lenker said something similar in her reply to those asking for a studio version of “heavy dragon” but I can’t find the interview. Before I got really into Gizz, I rarely listened to live recordings outside of a select few but they really opened that door for me and now I view them in a whole new way.
Bump as a reminder this band is awesome. Every few months/years I go on a Gizzard binge. This last album refueled the fire and have been going through the albums that never got so much attention. I am now in love with their chiller side.
Last I heard, they’re not streaming any of the orchestra sets sadly. Hopefully we still get the free bootlegs on Bandcamp/streaming though. The Forest Hills “rock show” on 8/2 will be streamed.
imo the key to enjoying Ice, Death etc is to delete the opening track (apologies to the mushroom enthusiasts but "mycelium" annoys me profoundly) and optionally the closer. the rest is Prime Gizz.
