Also man, this is the most vile I've ever seen Leo be on screen, can't think of a character I've held more contempt for in recent memory.
honestly my only "disappointment" is based on all the hype for how this is leo's best performance to date, i was expecting a different type of performance. he wasn't bad by any means but idk if it would be one of my five favorite leo performances, meanwhile almost everyone on screen is incredible
DiCaprio's reputation as a great actor is one of the great mysteries of cinema. At his best he doesn't get in the way of great movies.
I think The Departed is his best role, but I think he's really strong in this, Wolf and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
In terms of Marty films I still need to see, Silence and The Last Temptation of Christ are way up there.
Scorsese's entire filmography is worth watching. For someone with a reputation of making one type of film, he is always jumping from subject and across genres. Even his bad movies have some interesting things in them.
Cape Fear is the only one I'm kinda flat on but still think has strong moments. https://letterboxd.com/thelazypigeon/list/scorsese-ranked/
I agree with the premise regardless, but assuming this includes the Thurs afternoon showings too that rules. Even if younger people are obviously more likely to be willing to stay at a theater until 11 or later.
When I saw The Irishman in theaters (which I still thank my lucky stars I was able to do), the crowd was almost exclusively 60+ year old folks, was an interesting experience to be so significantly younger and ugly crying through most of the movie.
I think he’s really good but except for a few moments I didn’t think this role was one of his most memorable. Both his character and DeNiro’s felt pretty hollow. Lily Gladstone, Yancey Red Corn, and pretty much everyone else in the cast was top notch though.
and now shes either gonna win some oscars/golden globes etc or theres gonna be a lot of (justifiable) outrage and thinkpieces about why she didnt
I could see be putting off from some of Leo's performance in the final hour (final scene with Gladstone the exception) but goddamn I could not disagree harder with DeNiro's performance being hollow, Dude is slinging 100 MPH fastballs and giving us what might be the most disturbing performance of his career, which is quite a feat, just toe-to-tip evil, and the veil only briefly lifts when he interacts with Leo in the jail.
I understand the critiques of DeNiro's and Leo's acting overall but I thought Scorcese brought out the best in them in this film as he always does. I don't know that I've seen a plurality of Leo's non-Scorcese movies but of his roles I've seen I think I prefer him in The Aviator and maybe The Departed and that's it.
DeNiro is really operating at another level here. Even though you know he is guilty, he is so earnest-seeming that you almost want to believe him.
