The anecdote about the studio wanting either Damon or DiCaprio to survive The Departed so they can make a sequel is wild. These people have no interest in engaging on what a movie is trying to do.

It's en vogue to blame everything bad in movies on them but these attitudes aren't exclusive to American studio execuitves

 

Of course there are problems elsewhere, but he is an American filmmaker and we mostly talk about American films here. Most of the foreign films that make it here are lower-budget arthouse films, but there is a lot of garbage being made in other countries as well. However, the ultra-high budget franchise films are really only made in America, with China starting to catch up.
