No idea who Pinegrove is, but Julien Baker and Petal are absurdly good, and Kevin Devine is as good a live act as I've seen. This tour is insane.
Seconding what Aaron said. Cardinal is album of the year, and they are equally as talented as Julien and KD.
A few tours missed Toronto this year that disappointed me, but move this to the top of that list! If you're near one of these cities, for all of us not near one, go in our honour and love it!
I have a very sad story about missing out on Julien. I was supposed to see her in San Diego so I checked some dates prior to see her set times. None of them started before 9:30, so I felt comfortable showing up around 9. As I'm walking up to the venue, everyone is filing out talking about how amazing she was. Turns out she came on at 8 that night and finished at 9. I was crushed, but it serves me right for being rude enough to not come see the openers.
Oh man, that sucks. I've been to a lot of shows and I still can't say for sure I understand what the times listed actually mean. We were told 5PM for doors for a show in MN with Shakey Graves and Dr. Dog with an opening band just two weeks ago. We were running late so we got there at 6:20. The opener played at 5 and Shakey Graves was done by 6:30. Why would someone on the bill play before the show officially starts?
This has been a constant source of annoyance for me at shows where I live. I've seen 'doors at 7' mean 'first band starts playing at 7:05. I've always been to shows that have the doors open at 7, and no music is played until nearly 9. And no one ever says anything one way or the other! I get there are financial reasons (people buying beer/food/merch) and practical ones (I'd hate to be the opener who everyone avoids), but it still seems like life would be better with real, live, actual set times advertised. The bands know - why can't the fans?
I'm bummed that Julien won't be gracing Philly, but a Pinegrove/ Kevin Devine show is impossible to pass up.
Been waiting for Julien in chicago for a while. Musta missed her last time she was around, whenever that was.
God I can't wait for the AGO album. I agree though, I always try to go see every opener even if I hadn't heard of them before. Some of my favorite bands were that opener.
