Id be curious if: Kevin would like to shorten the gap between his next album releases? If he’ll release more of his pyre on content through bandcamp? If he plans to work on any of his “other” projects like Bad Books, Kenny, or anything like that, or if he has any other desires to work with other artists like the split series again.
Having seen him so many times, I'm pretty much past needing any songs or being disappointed when they don't get played. But my body vibrates when I think about the potential for another Kenny O'Brien show, with or without new music haha. @Aaron Mook I'd love to hear him speak a little bit more on the religious language/imagery on NRSNW. It's clear enough that he had Hinduism on his mind, so it would be interesting to hear some context for how/why that faith tradition (or specifically Ganesh, Shiva, Saraswati, and Parvati, the deities he names in 'Albatross' alongside Christ) made its/their way into his writing for this one.
Update: Interview went well (read: long, in a good way) and I'm transcribing it now! Also struggling with my second kidney stone of the year, so it may be a minute lol.
Looking forward to reading the interview. I think people will understand the need to wait. Good luck.
edit - lol I'm stupid they were rehearsing for the mmY farewell shows, not teasing a Matter Of Time III with a bunch of repeat tracks
I feel really bad. This is still coming. It ran really long (over an hour of audio to transcribe), and right after the interview, I went from kidney surgery to getting married and going on honeymoon, so life has been pretty nonstop. But rest assured, I am still working on it.
11 from nothings real so nothings wrong 5 from no one’s waiting up for me tonight 2 from this 7” 1 that was just released on a compilation a week or two again (who would anyone?) that’s 18
Didn’t know for sure that No One’s Waiting Up was recorded as part of the 18 because of the different feel stylistically. Thanks for the clarification.
Adore Kevin - and excited to see him on Wednesday night with Nada Surf - but just relistened to this and unfortunately large chunks still do nothing for me
Have you seen any of it live yet? If he’s got the full band it might change things for ya. He had Andy Prince on bass when I saw him and it made the difference
Kevin acoustic solo live is absolutely amazing. Really shows off his skills as a musician, and allows you to really focus in on the lyrics/storytelling. For the sake of the business model though, it probably does make more sense for him to do full band releases. He can repackage the songs through Patreon as acoustics/alt versions, and really tour and perform them as what’s best for that event which is really smart. Im not a patreon guy and I do wish he’d package some of these acoustic versions and throw them on bandcamp (after Patreon gets its first run rightfully).
Haven't seen him play any of the new songs before. The last time I saw him was just before Covid hit doing the 'Brother's Blood' anniversary solo shows Seen him a number of the years in different iterations - The highlight being the Manchester Orchestra/Bad Books/KD show. I'm hoping something clicks with me when I hear the songs in a different setting, because at the moment I'd probably rank this somewhere between his debut and 'Clocks' as being his weakest release
