Show last night was great. Really tonally varied set. I found myself thinking it would be a great show to take someone who doesn't really go to shows much to since he plays some pretty sonically different songs. Also, Albatross sounds incredible live. Also also, Andy Prince from Manchester is playing bass this tour and it's super cool to see him play some of the "jamier" songs and see him just go off. The whole band is super tight though. Everyone sounded awesome.
Really bummed I'm missing him tonight (Menzingers are also in town) will look at the setlist tomorrow and be pretty sad
Last night's setlist wasn't perfect for me but I get why he'd supplement NRSNW with the hits instead of digging too deep. I'm thrilled about the 5-piece too -- had no idea Strandberg or Prince would be on this.
they were fantastic last night in Chicago. The band is so tight. The new songs all sounded great and the old favorites were - dare I say? - gnarly with Andy Prince on bass. favorite incarnation I’ve seen since Bulldozer era
gonna catch the band tomorrow overall i think i would have loved this 5-10 years ago and it’s probably his most interesting release but, like a lot of his stuff when i go back to it these days, it’s a little long and samey throughout. idk how much i’ll go back to this but it’s a cool release nonetheless.
What's everyone's Top 3 so far for this album? For me it's still Stitching Up the Suture, Albatross and Tried to Fall In Love. The outro to Tried to Fall in Love is really cool. I feel like I notice something new every few listens still.
There’s definitely some middling tracks on this release, as with many others in his catalogue, but the tracks I do enjoy I like a lot more than anything off the past 2-3 LPs
Albatross Override Laurel Leaf Stitching up the Suture Albatross and override are by far my favorite songs he's done in some time. The outro to override is bonkers.
Albatross is already a KD classic, and if I had to pick a top 3 I'd add Laurel Leaf and Override. There's def a few tracks that I don't particularly care for, but it's such a cohesive piece of work (more so than any album of his outside of bubblegum) that it's just a lovely listen all the way through.
I actually really like albums like Brother’s Blood that show the range of styles and skill Kevin has. That said, Instigator is a bit more all over in a scattered way (still some great songs on there) so a cohesive record like Nothing’s Real felt right as a follow up. I know he’s doing a Patreon covers releases, but I believe KD mentioned having extra songs for an EP of originals too. Is this right…and if so is it a wide release?
someone in here, maybe you?, said it reminds them of Gotye and once I read that the song clicked for me
Really nice to see all the positive praise for this album - but for me it's a middling KD release I guess I might be a bit of an outlier in that I prefer much of his later output to his earlier stuff - I think this misses some of the righteous fury that both Instigator and (especially) Bubblegum had
I think it has an awful lot going for it, but I have to agree. It took me a few listens to realise that for once he's really not tackling anything overtly political. It's a deeply personal record which I respect, but the lyrics are incredibly elliptical, even for him. Sonically it's really accessible but thematically it's a bit harder to grasp.
