i like this a lot, and i'm not a big kevdev fan, only liking bubblegum so far feels like a mix between bubblegum and bulldozer and hitting a sweet spot there
Apparently he has a purple pressing of the new record out on tour with him. No die-cut gatefold sleeve like the first pressing though.
The new songs absolutely slay, esp live. Saw them last night, he played Freddie Gray Blues (in the South, no less) and I'm not sure if it was on purpose but it looked like he made a conscious effort to make eye contact with white people during certain lines ("This is bigger than the people I love," "Talking white privilege [...] this is not our reality" etc) which I thought was a cool thing to do. The key change in Daydrunk was better live bc it wasn't as noticeable with the bustle of the other instruments. Also he started off the set with solo Brother's Blood, which was interesting but probably necessary to close with I Was Alive Back Then. No album was neglected, except obviously Circle, and weirdly enough Bulldozer since he only played one song off of it. Two if you count She Can See Me but it sounded like the Bubblegum arrangement to me. Three piece Goddamn Band was pretty cool, and it was kind of interesting to hear Kevin be the most sonically muscular act on the bill. Like I know this to be true all things considered, but that's generally not how I think of his music haha.
This is exactly how I felt at my show haha. Also, idk if this has happened at other shows but by the end of Kevin's set more than half the audience had left.
OH and he played like thirty seconds of Jumper by Third Eye Blind and a little bit of All Star by Smash Mouth and what else people shouted out for a few minutes between songs. Just funny little thirty second joke covers lol A weird experience to be sure. Also yeah, I don't think it was quite half, but a ton of people left after Julien played, I would say a third of the crowd might have left for my date.
Does anyone know how consistent the set list has been? I'm assuming it's going to chance once Baker's off the tour.
Why would it change once she's off? I think it'll stay the same since the people in the Goddamn Band this time around are not like people who've toured with Kev for years as far as I know. So learning a ton of songs from his discog seems daunting and impractical + the drummer messed up a part on a couple of songs and Kevin looked kind of frustrated about it for a moment. Dunno that a ton of songs and changing up the setlist is in the cards right now unless it's more solo stuff since he did that a few times at my show
I figured going from four acts to three every night = more time for each band, particularly the headliner = different set list, even if it's just more songs. Could be mistaken though, especially if it's a new Goddamn Band.
Could be more solo songs, could be that you're right, but it looked to me like for the Julien dates they started the show earlier as opposed to cutting set times. Like, Pinegrove played like half of Cardinal and a decent amount of old songs too, that's like a 30-40 min set
dang is he really doing a near 30 song set list? seeing him tonight. Kevin Devine Setlist at Mississippi Studios, Portland
Would anyone want cheap tickets to his show on Sunday in Lawrence, KS? I'm having second thoughts about going cause of the long drive.
i like this more than bubblegum. and i love the production on here. i think its cool how it has that throw-back vibe to it, while still sounding so fresh.
Really pumped to see him on Friday. Really love the new album, up there on the top tier with Put Your Ghost To Rest and Make The Clocks Move for me.
I think after having it a while, I like it about as much as Bubblegum. Feels like this is a pretty good inbetween of Bubblegum and Between the Concrete and Clouds, still. The longer his career goes, the more BTCC feels like a turning point album for him. Don't know how i rank the albums in general though.
wish i saw him on that iioi/laura stevenson tour or the balance/manchester tour so i could compare experiences
He was so fucking good last night, holy shit. Like, Petal and Pinegrove were awesome (as expected) and I Kevin put on a good show, but goddamn. He looks like he has such a blast on stage and loves interacting with the crowd. "Both Ways" was out of control.
First album of his I've listened to since Brother's Blood and it's great - very infectious and I'm in love with the guitar tones
