lol my middle school jazz band is doing mister grinch and there is a whole step key change for the last verse after the solo section. I think it works there ha
I keep trying to listen to this but I end up going back to Jimmy Eat World. Haha. Poor timing for Kevin because I truly love the dude and think this is great. But yeah, JEW
No History is just so very fucking good. One of his best. Cannot wait to hear that live/go nuts when the bridge/guitar solo comes in. This tour is gonna be special.
Kevin's music has never totally clicked with me, but I'm already enjoying this a lot more than any of his previous releases. Some great guitar tones and melodies on this album.
In case you missed it: Interview: Kevin Devine • chorus.fm This is hands down the coolest thing I've gotten to do as a writer for AP/Chorus, and it's because of you all that I get to keep doing it, so thank you. Hope you like it.
This album is great. Never really listened to this dude before but It's working out to where I'm probably gonna see him twice -- in Baltimore and then Houston both times with Julien Baker and Pinegrove so I'm glad I've enjoyed listening to this as much as I have. Absolutely can't wait for those shows.
Anyone listening to this album should make sure to play this little treat of a video in between each track.... I've literally watched this like 40 times, and it's to the point where I cant watch it without starting to laugh hysterically.
this has some really strong songs. daydrunk, magic magnet, freddie gray, instigator, before you're here. the only song i really dont care for is guard your gates..
okay i've combed through this thread and i haven't really seen any comments about the production. personally, i really really enjoy this album and kevin's lyrics/instrumentation are of course always on point. but i can NOT look past the production/recording on this record. it sounds absolutely flat and awful to me. not sonically pleasing at all. if you listen to a track from bubblegum and then switch to instigator you would think you were listening to a dial up internet stream. does anyone else see where i am coming from?
I actually like a lot of the production choices on here. I think bubblegum has a very original production to it that makes it special but nothing on here bothers me. I think Magic magnet and no history also have really solid production
Yeah, I think the production choices are very deliberately throwback sounding. It might be because it's John Agnello and he's worked with these bands, but I feel like I hear some Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. in the production choices, maybe some early Pavement too. And I can see how that might not be someone's bag, though I disagree completely that it sounds flat -- Magic Magnet, just to use as an example, was a song I wasn't big on when I heard the version on the split series, and I think the version on the album pops WAY more, it sounds a lot better and the contrast between the loud parts and the not as loud parts is a lot better...plus I think the indie rock, biting sound melded with a lot of power pop hooks just generally works really well here.
