I still think Father Time is one of his greatest, and one of the best tracks of the past few years even but nothing else moves me. the Sampha effect, man
Haven’t listened to it in a good while. I don’t think anything will ever touch TPAB for me. But i liked it pretty well and keeps me interested in what he’ll do in the future.
I was a little meh on it in 2022 but I revisited it a lot last year in preparation for seeing him and it really grew on me
No I can't possibly see this as anything but great having seen much of the album live. I liked it a lot on release but that made everything click.
It's not bad but I have had absolutely 0 interest in revisiting it since summer 2022. The overall production value and scope is higher on it than s80 and untitled, but that's the only category in which it's not his weakest by a fair margin.
That dialogue song (We Cry Together was it?) is one of the worst rap songs by a serious rapper in like 15 years
Personally as a parent of two young children this album hits me thematically more than any of the others
I find a lot of artists put out really interesting work when they’re actively trying to push against what’s “enjoyable” to listen to. Not being into it is a fair reaction, and an expected one, but sometimes I feel like artists are actively asking the audience to sit with something. Mileage may vary, still free to critique, etc, but part of why I find Kendrick interesting is how fully formed and intentional his albums feel even when my first reaction is largely working through what he’s trying to do.
100% agree with @Nathan . I think he's really thoughtful about concepts and sound (the way another major rapper used to be before becoming a nazi) to the point where even if I'm not totally gelling with what he's doing, I'm consistently interested in wrapping my head around his work.
