S.80 is the indie film version of his pre-fame life GKMC is the major studio version of the same story TPAB is the one only made to get an Oscar Damn is the Kung-Fu (lol)
So how is the good pressing of this album? Does it look good? Or should I just go with the standard black ?
Haha. It’s great because we’ve been told it’s supposed to be great. Like it was made to be popular, hit certain artistic marks but at the end of the day it’s kind of a little too much to enjoy more than a handful of times. The post was also painting very broad strokes. And 100% my opinion.
There’s definitely some truth in this. That spoken word interlude between each track is so fake-deep it hurts. I skipped it every time even during my early listens. But TPAB is still a great album, despite being a bit much. As you said, I rarely ever return to it though. GKMC and DAMN are probably his most replayable IMO.
Isn’t untitled/unmastered just b-sides/throwaways? I don’t even really consider that an album. I think I listened to it once.
Jesus christ people TPAB and untitled/unmastered are both phenomenal, what is happening here And the spoken word poem that develops through TPAB until the end reveal is great
Seems more to me like people are now predispositioned to think of Kendrick as overrated due to his acclaim/popularity than to consider what got him there, which is not only obvious lyrical growth from project to project but also a knack for crafting unique hip-hop records with consistently ambitious themes and structures. It's normal to have an opinion about the records, but to act like any of them are "fake deep" or designed to be anything other than genuine seems like a leap based on what we've observed of him and his career imho
It’s also a semi-jokey post. I personally don’t go listen to TPAB front to back often because of the intertwining poem. And I’m very much an album person so it’s not a rewarding listen in my eyes. I completely understand all the deserved claim it gets. Just in my eyes a great album should have a high replay ability
You’re actually telling me people listen to and don’t skip the spoken word interludes in TPAB???? He repeats the same lines of the poem every song and it’s a waste of time IMO. Including it once in its entirety at the end would’ve been fine enough.
